Berkeley police are reminding residents that fireworks of any sort are dangerous and illegal in Berkeley after a juvenile victim sustained a “serious injury” on July 4.

Police said they got a call around 9:51 p.m. Thursday “regarding a juvenile who needed medical attention after a firework exploded in their hand” on the 1800 block of Fairview Street in South Berkeley, police spokesperson Officer Jessica Perry said in an email.

City police and firefighter-paramedics responded, and several people at the scene “provided support” as well, Perry said.

The most grievously injured juvenile was taken to a hospital for treatment. Another juvenile, who sustained “minor injuries,” was not, Perry said.

“This is a reminder that fireworks are both dangerous and illegal and can be life-threatening,” Perry wrote. “The Berkeley Police Department hopes that both juveniles and those involved in this accident make a full recovery.”
