Utility workers were still trying to restore water Monday afternoon after a break in a main Sunday knocked out pressure to dozens of buildings around the Berkeley Marina.

The break happened Sunday evening on a stretch of West Frontage Road that runs along Aquatic Park and interstates 80 and 580, said Sun Kwong Sze, a spokesperson for the East Bay Municipal Utilities District. The exact cause of the break was still under investigation, he said Monday.

The pipe that broke, a 12-inch main, is “considered to be a larger water main,” feeding “several different smaller-diameter water mains,” Sze said.

As a result, there was no water pressure to 42 “services,” or water meters, on some parts of University Avenue, Eastshore Highway, West Frontage Road, Marina Boulevard, Spinnaker Way and Seawall Drive, according to the utility. A meter could account for a building as small as a single-family home but also larger multi-unit properties, Sze said.

As of Monday afternoon, workers had repaired the damaged section of pipe and were testing to ensure everything was running correctly, Sze said. Service was projected to resume around 7 p.m.
