Man, 27, dies in pool accident at family gathering

A beloved son died in an accident in a swimming pool, despite his mother’s efforts to save him.

Lewis Edwards, 27, died during a family gathering at a house near Loch Rannoch, Perthshire, at the weekend.

His mother Ashley, best friend Jay Hossain and others battled to save him after he lost consciousness but their efforts were in vain.

Ms Edwards was called to the pool by her son’s friends after the accident, and she found him unconscious and unresponsive.

He was given CPR, including from a nurse in the group, for around an hour until paramedics arrived but he was declared dead at the scene. Police Scotland said the death was being treated as unexplained, but there were no suspicious circumstances.

Lawyer Ms Edwards told The Courier: ‘We were having a lovely family time and after dinner, Lewis and some of the other young ones went to use the games complex and indoor swimming pool.

‘Not long after, his friends came through to get us because there had been an incident in the swimming pool. When I got there, Lewis was unconscious and unresponsive. I carried out CPR, along with other members of our group, including a friend who is a nurse.

‘We did this for around an hour until paramedics arrived. Sadly, Lewis was gone.’

Mr Edwards was a tree surgeon and worked with Dundee City Council. He also had a love of snakes, keeping 16 of the reptiles at the home he shared with his mother.

She told the newspaper: ‘He was much loved. He was mischievous with a smiley face that lit up. He loved the outdoors and he loved his snakes.’

Mr Hossain said his best friend had a ‘huge personality’ and he ‘always acted out of sheer kindness towards other people’. He said: ‘He always went out of his way to help other people, even putting himself out if necessary.

‘He was the most likeable person I ever met.’

Yesterday Police Scotland said the death ‘is being treated as unexplained but there are no apparent suspicious circumstances’, adding: ‘A report has been submitted to the procurator fiscal.’
