Outrage over dropping of police investigation into bakery who made Hamas-themed cake for kid's birthday: 'Ignoring extremism'

Police have dropped an investigation into a bakery that made a Hamas-themed birthday cake for a four-year-old's party despite a state premier labelling the incident 'horrifying'.

Oven Bakery by Fufu, which is based in the western Sydney suburb of Auburn, baked the cake and similar cupcakes which were decorated with Hamas symbols and an image of the terrorist group's masked spokesman Abu Obaida.

The images of the cake, which had a boy's name on it saying he was four, were posted on social media and subsequently referred to Australian Federal Police (AFP) who have now declared the baked items broke no laws.

An AFP spokesperson told Sky News, which originally referred the images to NSW police a month ago before they were passed along to the federal agency, that they had assessed 'no Commonwealth offence has been committed'.

Jewish leaders expressed outrage at the decision.

Australian Jewish Association CEO Robert Gregory told Sky News it is 'disappointing but not at all surprising' that authorities were willing to allow 'brainwashing' of young children to support terrorism.

'It's one thing for politicians to use strong words against extremism, but time and again we see the authorities failing to act,' Mr Gregory said.

'This lack of action once more sends a clear message of weakness to Islamic radicals.

'Many Australians will be asking whether our security agencies are asleep at the wheel or are wilfully ignoring Islamic extremism.

'The problem isn't going to go away. Ignoring the growing Islamist extremism in our suburbs ensures that Australians are in for challenging times ahead.'

Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ) co-CEO Alex Ryvchin told The Australian the bakery and the child's parents should be held accountable for 'glorifying extremism'.

'It takes a rare kind of psychosis to want to teach infant children that Hamas terrorists are to be admired and emulated,' Mr Ryvchin said.

Previously NSW Premier Chris Minns called the incident 'horrifying' and said children's parties 'should be innocent and fun, not hateful'.

Originally the Oven Bakery by Fufu Instagram account featured a photo of the birthday cake with a camouflage-wearing child posing next to it, his face masked in a keffiyeh and making the same hand gesture as Obaida.

Party guests were also served Hamas-themed cupcakes and the event was decorated with Palestinian flag bunting and balloons.

After a backlash the bakery deleted its Instagram account but has since reinstated it without the controversial cakes.

The account's two most recent posts express support for Palestinians in the bloody conflict with Israel that has wracked Gaza since Hamas launched terror attacks on the Jewish state on October 7 last year.

The bakery has been contacted for comment.
