My neighbour ripped up my garden hedge to clear his drive - I'm heartbroken... but the council don't care

  • Green- thumbed Dorothy Welsh from Girvan says the garden is 'all she has'
  • Conservative  councillor Gavin Scott has claimed the hedge is 'council property'

A woman is heartbroken after a neighbour tore down her hedge in a furious row over his driveway.

Dorothy Welsh, 58, says she repeatedly begged Gavin Scott to leave the bush that separated their homes in Girvan, South Ayrshire.

But she was left in floods of tears after he ripped the shrubs out - destroying her precious sanctuary she claims is 'all she has'.

Ms Welsh had appealed to her local council for support but accused them of her  ignoring it and leaving her feeling 'powerless'.

She told the Daily Record: 'I don't even go out so my garden is my whole life. It is all I've got. I have nothing else.

'I keep blaming myself and thinking, what did I do? I don't know what I've done.'

However, Conservative councillor for South Ayshire, Mr Scott, has remained adamant that the hedge is 'council property'.

He claims the feud had been ongoing for around three or four months and said that he intends to make his side of garden into a driveway.

Describing Dorothy as a 'very keen gardener',  he added: '[She] was upset to say the least, but the hedge is certified as council property officially and I've been snipping away.

'She had the police here yesterday but the sergeant said it's 'case closed'.

'Above all I am allowed to do everything.'

Dorothy, who rarely leaves her home and gets pleasure from tending to her garden, said it's 'all she has'.

Dorothy friend David Russell lodged a complaint with the Conservative Party as well as South Ayrshire council quipping that he had been 'shunned'.

He claims to have rung the Conservative Head Office in Edinburgh however he has not heard back.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: 'On Wednesday, 22 May, 2024, officers received a report of vandalism in the Carrick Road area of Girvan.

'A 69-year old man was charged in connection with the incident. A report has been sent to the Procurator Fiscal.'

A South Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: 'We are aware of the situation and we are following due process.'
