A children's clown performer has been arrested after allegedly trying to start a second job as a male prostitute.

Francis Bui was caught when he met with an undercover cop posing as a client after he allegedly agreed to have sex for $100 an hour in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

He performed as The Amazing Franko and told police he was broke after coming back from traveling with a local circus, and turned to prostitution.

Bui, 28, placed an ad on a local classifieds website in the escort section, advertising himself 'in a sexually explicit manner', police alleged.

He left a phone number that Carbondale Police saw and texted under the guise of a prospective client, according to a probable cause affidavit.

The moonlighting clown allegedly agreed to sex without a condom for $100 an hour at a hotel in Carbondale, part of the Scranton metro area.

Undercover cops met Bui at the agreed time of 9.30pm on May 18 after he told them which car he was in, and he was arrested.

'Bui said this was his first time prostituting and stated he knew it was wrong,' police alleged in the affidavit.

'He stated that money was low so he was prostituting to supplement his income. He admitting to agreeing to meet for sex for the amount of US currency.'

Bui will face the Carbondale Magisterial District Court on August 16 for a preliminary hearing.
