Tornado watch warning has been issued
One or two tornados may hit the UK as it is affected by strong winds and rain, according to the Tornado and Storm Research Organisation (TORRO).
'The highest risk of one or two tornadoes would likely be along and south of a line from S Wales to London, but the risk cannot be ruled out a bit further north too,' it said.
Met Office bears good news of a 'brighter start' to Friday - but says Storm Ciaran will continue to bring 'heavy rain and strong winds'
The Met Office said we can expect 'a breezy but brighter' start to Friday in the south, with showers feeding in to western coasts.
However, the storm will 'continue to bring heavy rain and strong winds to Scotland and parts of northern England'.
Motorists urged to avoid coasts and rural roads amid reports of falling trees
Motorists have been urged to avoid coasts and rural roads following reports of falling trees.
RAC Breakdown spokesperson Rod Dennis said: 'Sticking to major routes, away from coasts and rural roads where there’s a greater chance of falling branches and trees, is a good policy.
'Drivers should keep a firm grip of the steering w heel and take particular care when passing high-sided vehicles, which can cause an unnerving buffeting effect that some people may not be familiar with.'

Jersey Airport will remain closed to commercial flights due to extensive equipment and system failures
Ports of Jersey said Jersey Airport would remain closed to commercial flights into Friday because of extensive infrastructure, equipment and system failures.
'Ports of Jersey engineers have been assessing the damage caused by Storm Ciaran and detailed inspections of the airport estate have identified extensive infrastructure, equipment and system failures,' it said.
'We are working to remedy the faults as quickly as possible, but until the work is completed and the airport is safe, secure and compliant, it has to remain closed to commercial operations.
'We are striving to open the airport at 2pm tomorrow and a further announcement at midday will confirm whether this is possible.'

Storm Ciaran tornados have battered Britain as 104mph winds were likened to a 'disaster movie' - as 127,000 homes lost power and people were told not to travel until Sunday.
The Channel Islands were worst hit with dozens of homes on Jersey evacuated as a tornado blew through, trees were ripped up and huge hailstones smashed windows.
Roofs were torn off houses and trampolines were blown onto railway lines, with train operators urging commuters to work from home amid widespread disruption.
Tugs are used to bring ferries into port
Ferry company DFDS has apologised to any customers who were set to travel today from Dover, saying the suspension of its services was a 'very rare thing'.
A spokesman said: 'As the storm has calmed a bit, ships are getting into the ports again one by one using tug boats for additional safety.
'As soon as the storm quietens down, we can increase the number of vessels getting into the port at any one time.'
Floods minister says potential flooding risks still high
Floods minister Rebecca Pow said potential flooding risks remained across the country with river levels still high, large waves at the coast and saturated ground.
The Emergency Operations Centre had been activated to support the Cabinet Office in co-ordinating the Government's response, she confirmed.

James Watts and his colleagues from Coverzone discovered the footage after parking a vehicle in the car park to try out a new car cover.
Some children may not return to school until Monday after Storm Ciaran battered south of England
Some children may not be able to get back into their classrooms until Monday after Storm Ciaran battered the south of England and the Channel Islands with gusts of up to 100mph and heavy rain.
Damage to properties in Jersey meant some residents had to evacuate their homes and seek refuge in a hotel, with one woman saying hailstones 'bigger than a golf ball' had broken her windows.
The storm caused travel chaos and the AA, which had a large number of callouts in southern England, said it had 'rescued 84 customers stuck in flood so far today, with thousands more impacted by the weather'.
By Thursday afternoon National Grid said 9,000 properties were without power in the South West.
Environment Agency likely to close floodgates tonight in the south east
The Environment Agency has said it is likely to close floodgates for the second night in a row in the south east as the country continues to be battered by Storm Ciaran.
All flood glates in Lymington, in the New Forest district of Hampshire were closed last night to reduce coastal flood risks at high tide from Keyhaven to Lymington.
These gates will be closed again at high tide today, the EA said.
The south east branch of the government body said: 'We were out closing floodgates due to high tides and Storm Ciaran & we're likely to close them again tonight.'
Environment Agency issues warning to keep away from coastal paths, piers and promenades along the south coast
The Environment Agency has issued a warning advising people keep away from coastal paths, piers and promenades along the south coast as Storm Ciaran causes huge waves.
The government body said that coastal roads can get flooded and advised against driving through floodwater.

The council added that refuse collectors will try to makeup for any missed bin collections tomorrow, advising locals to put their bins out for collection.
Breaking:M20 coastal carriageway closed
The M20 coastbound carriageway between junctions eight and nine is being temporarily closed due to disruption caused by the adverse weather conditions.
The closure will allow freight bound for the continent to queue on the empty section of motorway in order to minimise disruption to Kent's wider road network.
All EU-bound freight must use the M20 whilst all other traffic must follow the signed diversions.
Chief Superintendent Simon Alland, of Kent Police's Tactical Operations Command, said: 'The closure of the M20 is an emergency measure that is only used following consultation with our partners in the Kent Resilience Forum (KRF) and after a thorough assessment of issues including public safety and traffic volumes. The KRF will continue to monitor the situation over the next 24 hours.'
More than 80 Jersey residents evacuate homes
Some 84 residents in Jersey were evacuated from their homes after they were damaged by Storm Ciarán.
A total of 69 adults and 15 children and their pets have been put up in alternative accommodation. Three people have been taken to Jersey's hospital for emergency treatment, and one has since been discharged.
Many islanders have had to leave their homes in Jersey as wind speeds of up to 104mph were recorded.
Gloucester Street in St Helier runs alongside the island's hospital. The road was closed by Jersey Police due to 'concerns about an area of the hospital roof'.
Natalie Carre lives in St Clement with her two children. She described the damage, saying: 'All the windows are smashed in... the whole front of our building is smashed. All our cars are written off, we've got neighbours who've got holes in their roofs.
'Their roofs have come into their children's bedroom... it is absolute carnage. We know that there's water coming into our house.'

Government responds to farmers' claims
The Government has responded to claims by the the rural landowners' body that farmers and rural communities are 'unfairly shouldering the burden' of flooding because of 'years of poor management' from the Environment Agency.
The Country Land and Business Association (CLA) said earlier today that the Government need to do more to support farmers and landowners and said their fields are being sacrificed to save houses and villages downstream.
But the Department for Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has now said that while they are 'conscious' of the impact of storms on the farming community, farmers were eligible for grants worth up to £2,500.
A Defra spokesperson said: 'We're conscious of the impact Storm Babet and Ciaran will have had on the farming community, and the important role to play in reducing the risk of flooding and coastal erosion as we adapt to climate change.
'Farmers are already eligible for support through the flood recovery framework announced last week, including a grant of up to £2,500 as part of the business recovery grant.
'Since 2015 we have also protected 580,000 acres of agricultural land along with thousands of businesses, communities and major infrastructure via our floods investment programmes.'
Lone windsurfer braves storm off Dutch coast
Windsurfers braved the wind on the coast of Wijk aan Zee in the Netherlands today during Storm Ciaran.
The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute had issued a Code Orange warning, similar to the warnings issued by the Met Office in the UK, of very strong winds for the Dutch coastal provinces due to the storm.
These photos show a windsurfer riding gnarly waves by himself on a yellow board with a green and purple sail. Another photo shows a smiling windsurfer walking ashore with his board as others continue to sail behind him:
'Strongest wind we have ever had' in Bexhill
A Bexhill resident suggested Storm Ciaran has created 'the strongest wind we have ever had' in the East Sussex town.
Photo editor Nicola Pharoah posted a video on social media of the impact of Storm Ciaran on her garden.
She said: 'This is the strongest wind we have ever had - it's not stopping either. The wind started getting very strong at about 6am and now we getting huge gusts every 30 or 40 seconds.
'There is a permanent dull hum in the background from the sea that's at the bottom of our road, and garden just looks wild!'
She said the Bexhill Sixth Form College, where her children study, has been closed with all lessons moving online.
Rivers in Northern Ireland hit record highs
Some rivers in Northern Ireland reached record high levels following several days of heavy rain.
While the region avoided the worst of Storm Ciaran which battered the south of England and the Channel Islands, work is under way to repair damage following bad weather earlier in the week.
This morning, the train line between Portadown and Dundalk was closed, while bus services were suspended in Downpatrick due to flooding in the town.
The Department for Infrastructure described 'significant flooding' in Downpatrick, adding it may not be able to work to reduce the flood water until Friday when river levels have dropped.

'Firefighters have been dealing with fallen trees onto power lines, rescuing people from cars in floodwater and making dangerous structures safe.'
Shortly before 2am crews from Redbridge and Lyndhurst rescued the driver of a van which had become surrounded by floodwater in Paradise Lane in Woodlands.
The spokeswoman said: 'Crews used a ladder to reach the stranded driver and bring him to safety, before requesting police to close the road.'
Crews from Grayshott also helped colleagues in Surrey after a driver was trapped in their car in Haslemere at 3am before they then rescued four people from another car stuck in floodwater under a bridge.
A woman was also rescued from a car in floodwater in Crow Hill, Crow, shortly after 7am by Ringwood and Fordingbridge crews.
The spokeswoman said: 'The woman was unable to open the door of the vehicle due to the force of the flowing water. A water rescue wading team were deployed to bring the casualty to dry land where she was assessed.'

Somerset Council's highways teams responded to more than 100 incidents as Storm Ciaran battered the county overnight.
About 30 incidents involved fallen or hazardous trees while much of the rest were flood-related issues.
The council said 10 schools in the county were closed due to staff and students facing travel problems while Haygrove School in Bridgwater was closed due to building safety concerns.
Historic coastguard cottage on cliff edge
Decades of coastal erosion have left a historic coastguard cottage teetering just inches from a cliff edge as experts warn the arrival of Storm Ciaran could cause further damage and place it in even more peril.
The cottage, one of a seven-long terrace of homes built for coastguards between 1800 and 1820, is the latest which may face being torn down after its neighbour was demolished over four weeks in 2014.
The property at Birling Gap, near Eastbourne, East Sussex, is one of four left standing and will be the next to be pulled down as coastal erosion continues to threaten it.

Jersey 'like a scene from a disaster movie'
The chairman of Jersey's Consumer Council said Storm Ciaran hitting the island was like a 'scene from a disaster movie'.
Carl Walker, 45, who is based in St Helier on the Channel island, said residents have been 'well warned and prepared for the past few days' about how the storm could affect them, but added: 'I don't think anyone expected it to be quite as bad as it was.'
He and his family were woken by huge hailstorms at midnight, which he said were 'marble-sized' and had gelled together to create 'golf ball sized lumps of ice'.
'We camped out in our living room downstairs with our children (Ellie-Rose, 13, Callum, 11 and Erin, 7) because it was just simply too noisy and too frightening to be upstairs in the bedrooms - tiles were lifting, debris was hitting the roof, windows were flexing,' he added.
'The noise of the wind was just incredible and quite frightening. It was like a scene from a disaster movie.'
After walking in the area after the winds dropped, he added: 'The area is scattered with debris, whether it be roof tiles, bits of masonry, large pieces of trees and I think the authorities here are doing what they can to focus on opening up the main roads and help people whose homes have been ruined by (the storm).'

Check your property insurance terms
Households and businesses affected by damage caused by Storm Ciaran are being reminded to keep receipts and check the terms of their insurance policies.
The British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) said that temporary emergency repairs at a reasonable cost should be paid by insurers, but people should make sure they keep all of their receipts.
Many home insurance policies and business policies cover flood and water damage, but it is important to check exclusions or excesses in the policy that may affect the cover, it said.
Flood damage caused to cars should be covered by comprehensive motor insurance, and Biba suggested that cars standing in water for any length of time should be checked as brakes or other components may be affected.
If a home has been made uninhabitable, the reasonable cost of alternative accommodation will usually be met, up to stated limits, by insurers, it said.
The exact terms and conditions of individual insurance policies will vary.

Portland in Dorset is cut off by Storm Ciaran
Storm Ciaran has today cut off the island of Portland after a flood alert siren was activated for only the second time in nine years.
The Dorset isle, which has a population of 13,000, has one road on and off of it to the mainland, which was closed by the Environment Agency just after 8am.
A wailing siren was activated for the whole community to hear amid fears that the sea could soon breach the coastal defences along the mile-long causeway.
Dorset Council UK tweeted: "Portland Beach Road is now closed. We have teams at either end of the road to assist with any problems, but we expect the highway to be closed for at least a few hours.’
The last time the siren sounded at Portland was in 2014, when huge 30ft waves moved thousands of tonnes of shingles at the 18 mile long Chesil Beach, permanently destroyed the local landmark, the Pom Pom Rock.
It also went off during the flooding of 1979, and there was a great storm disaster in 1824 which killed 22 people and destroyed 25 houses on the isle.
Strong winds in Sussex and Kent today

Gale-force winds brought down trees and roads blocked with police urging motorists to only drive if necessary. Pedestrians were urged to take care and to avoid the seafront and piers in Brighton, Eastbourne and Hastings.
Sussex Police said: 'We are very busy this morning dealing with collisions and carriageway hazards across the county.'
There was flooding in Worthing, West Sussex, with some roads left impassable to both cars and pedestrians. Drains blocked by autumn leaves caused further havoc causing a build-up of flood water. Some residents and business owners waded out into the roads in an attempt to unblock the drain themselves.
Storm Ciaran latest on Isle of Wight today
MailOnline journalist PAUL THOMPSON is on the Isle of Wight today and has just sent us this report on the latest Storm Ciaran situation there:
Dozens of homes were without power after Storm Ciaran battered the Isle of Wight this morning with gale force winds and torrential rain.
Several roads were closed due to flooding and repair crews tried to restore power after winds brought down overhead power lines. But fears that Ciaran would wreak havoc on coastal areas appeared to have been averted as it moved over the island.
Ferry services to and from the island from Southampton were running as normal. Travel between Ryde and Portsmouth on the Fast Cat service were temporarily suspended due to flooding at Ryde Pier – but services resumed shortly after 7am.
The local authority in Hampshire had declared a major incident ahead of Storm Ciaran warning residents to stay indoors and avoid travelling.
Forecasters had predicted gusts of wind up to 80mph with residents on coastal areas offered sandbags to shore up their properties. Many of the tourist attractions on the island, including Dinosaur Isle and Shanklin Chine, closed for the day.
Hailstones bigger than golf balls on Jersey
A civil servant has told of how she was woken at midnight by hailstones bigger than golf balls from Storm Ciaran.
Suzie Phillips, 44, who is based in Jersey, said that she was 'quite lucky' not to have been affected by flooding because she lives in the north of the island and is 'quite elevated', but was awoken by huge hailstones at around midnight.
'The hailstones were quite a bit heavier and bigger than a golf ball and we've had three windows damaged by them - in my daughter's bedroom, a landing and a bathroom,' she said.
'We all went into a back bedroom that we thought was going to be sheltered last night because that happened at midnight, but we knew that the storm was going to pick up from about 2am or 3am onwards.
'It was quite worrying, especially for the kids - they were quite anxious about it.'
She added the house had lost some roof slates and many trees have fallen, but commended the emergency services for 'being incredible throughout the night' by repairing roads and helping those who have had to evacuate their properties.
DFDS cancels all Dover-France crossings

RNLI water safety manager Ross Macleod said: 'This rough weather could make visiting our coasts around southern England and Wales treacherous and bring very dangerous sea conditions.
'While people may want to experience extreme weather around the coast, we would strongly advise against doing so. It is not worth risking your life, so we urge people to respect the water and watch from a safe distance.'
Commuters urged to work from home
Commuters in southern England were urged to work from home by Southern Rail, with Southeastern 'strongly advising' passengers not to travel on routes in and out of London before 9am today as they assess any fallen trees and debris on the line.
