Benitez was said to be interested in signing Diaz during his first transfer window as the Everton boss.
Having approached Porto over a swap deal with Rodriguez, the Toffees were said to be close to agreeing terms with Diaz.
However, negotiations over a deal came to a halt and Rodriguez subsequently joined Qatari side Al-Rayyan.
As a result, Diaz stayed at Porto - where he went on to face Liverpool twice in the Champions League group stages.

Diaz will bolster the attacking options available to Klopp as Liverpool pursue Manchester City at the top of the Premier League and try to win the Champions League and the domestic cups.
