Wrexham have been left red-faced after it was discovered an administrative error means one of their released players actually has 12 months remaining on his contract.

On May 3, Wrexham announced that centre back Jordan Tunnicliffe was one of the eight players being released from Phil Parkinson's squad following the supposed expiry of his deal and promotion to League One.

Tunnicliffe said his goodbyes to the rest of the squad and it is understood that he was removed from the first team WhatsApp group thereafter.


But Mail Sport has learned that an input mistake was made when Tunnicliffe's initial contract was drawn up and the expiry on the document was June 2025 rather than June 2024.

The former Crawley Town defender is now in negotiations with Wrexham as the Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney-backed side look to come to a swift resolution.

In a statement to Mail Sport, Wrexham confirmed that they are aware of Tunnicliffe's contract dispute and it has been referred to an independent determination.

Tunnicliffe joined Wrexham in July 2022 but went on to make just 41 appearances in all competitions with his time in North Wales blighted by injury.

He last played for Wrexham on February 24 in a 1-0 defeat away at Gillingham.

Parkinson hailed Tunnicliffe as an 'immense character' upon what he thought was the defender's contract expiry, but player and club are now locked in a contract dispute.
