Roma boss Paulo Fonseca has confirmed he would like to extend Manchester United loanee Chris Smalling's stint at the club by at least another season.
The 30-year-old centre-back joined the Serie A side on loan last summer, and with that deal expiring at the end of this season, Fonseca is keen to keep the on-loan defender at the Stadio Olimpico.
Speaking to ESPN, Fonseca admitted he has been impressed with Smalling's professionalism and humility as well as its adaptation to the Italian league, which he says has historically been tough for English defenders.

'I will do everything I can to keep him at Roma next year too,' Fonseca said. 'I know he wants to stay, let's see what happens.
'He's an amazing man, so humble, so professional. He is adored by the fans and established himself as one of the leaders in the dressing room.
'It's not easy for English central defenders to adapt so quickly to Italian football, the record there isn't good. But he has been amazing.'
Smalling was absent from Roma's first four games of the season partly due to muscle fatigue, but has gone on to establish himself as a first-team regular with starts in 21 of the next 22 Serie A games.
In total, the United loanee has managed 28 games across all competitions for Fonseca's men this season, notching goals against Udinese and Brescia as well as an assist against the latter.
The centre-back, who joined United from Fulham in 2010, has two years left on his contract at Old Trafford.
The 30-year-old has become a first-team regular and has made 28 appearances this season
