Marcelo Bielsa's voice boomed around the stadium as Leeds United moved closer to another win. He was giving instructions, but his tone made them sound like commands.
‘Again, Rapha!’ Bielsa bellowed. ‘Again! Again!’
He was not alone in wanting to see his fleet-footed winger get the ball. Raphinha had one of those matches where almost everything came off. His trickery and searing pace left Southampton right back Jan Bednarek seeing stars and propelled Leeds into the top 10.
Leeds United cruised back into winning ways against Southampton on Tuesday night
Patrick Bamford gave the hosts the advantage with a well-taken effort in second half
Bamford's coolly taken strike into the corner marked his 13th league goal of the season
This was the club’s 200th Premier League victory, and it should be remembered for how the Brazilian ran amok.
Leeds sped away from Southampton with three unanswered second-half goals and Raphinha was central to it all. He scored one, could have had another and lit up a miserable night.
Be in no doubt that scouts will be watching Raphinha’s every move — while kicking themselves for not spotting him at Rennes last season — but the 24-year-old is thriving in Yorkshire. Bielsa’s appraisal of his efforts was suitably glowing.
‘He is very ambitious and competitive,’ said the Leeds boss. ‘He has a mixture which is not very common in that he works so hard but is also so creative.
‘I sincerely think that I can add very little to his game. The best thing with players like him is to let them be themselves.’
It was thrilling to watch. You know when you head to Elland Road that things will never be boring, and here was another contest that was full of life, drama and talking points — as two skilful teams made light work of a cabbage-patch pitch. Southampton certainly played their part.
Leeds had the best chances before the break. Tyler Roberts missed a glorious opportunity following superb work by Raphinha in the 24th minute, then the Brazilian was denied by Oriol Romeu’s outstanding tackle in the 39th.
Sandwiched in the middle was Southampton’s big moment, when Nathan Tella went to ground as he jostled with Diego Llorente. Referee Andre Marriner awarded a penalty, but after advice from VAR Kevin Friend the decision was rightly overturned.
Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl had made changes to his starting line-up — resting Danny Ings and Takumi Minamino following their exertions against Chelsea — and, eventually, Saints ran out of steam. They are now winless in eight league games.
‘We are not playing like a winning team,’ Hasenhuttl grumbled. ‘Leeds deserved this win.’
Leeds confirmed all three points as Stuart Dallas netted from outside the box later in the half
Raphinha added the icing on the cake with a deadly free-kick from 25 yards out
The Brazilian had been wonderful in attack for Leeds all evening and deserved his goal
And how. The dynamic changed quickly after the interval when Patrick Bamford opened the scoring, his super left-footed finish applying the gloss to a perfect ball from Roberts. Leeds were liberated, and Raphinha took over.
Stuart Dallas doubled the lead in the 78th minute when he ran 40 yards to receive a pass back from substitute Helder Costa and beat Alex McCarthy with a drive from the edge of the area.
Dallas celebrated by hoisting a shirt dedicated to ‘Granny Val’, Kalvin Phillips’ grandmother who died last week. Raphinha then had a chance to make a tribute of his own, as he provided the final flourish with a 20-yard free-kick.
He lifted his shirt to reveal a message for the family of Ronaldinho, whose mother also died last week. Raphinha wanted to do something to show support for his idol.
It would have been appreciated — as was this performance.

And that’s full time at Elland Road and Leeds are back to winning ways!
After a goalless first period, Patrick Bamford quickly gave Marcelo Bielsa’s side the advantage with a well-taken effort into the bottom corner for his 13th goal of the Premier League season.
Southampton kept knocking on Islian Meslier’s door in the Leeds goal but efforts from Adam Armstrong and Che Adams couldn’t even the scoreline.
Leeds confirmed all three points as Stuart Dallas netted from outside the box following a great counter attacking move from Helier Costa.
Raphinha, who had been wonderful in attack for the Whites all evening, then added the icing on the cake with a deadly free-kick from 25 yards out.
Three added minutes.
Helder Costa sees his effort fly over the bar after more great work from Raphinha out on the left wing. He has been a menace all night.
GOAL FOR LEEDS! What a wonderful free kick from Raphinha. The winger, who has been great tonight, beat McCarthy on his own side. A well taken low set piece.
Helder Costa takes Leeds on a very dangerous counter attack but is tripped by Mouss Djenpo. The Saints attacker is booked.
Adam Armstrong dribbles through the Leeds midfield and tries to find the top corner but his effort goes high and wide.
GOAL FOR LEEDS! Stuart Dallas with a powerful shot from the edge of the box and there is nothing McCarthy can do. Great work from Helder Costa in the build up.
James Ward-Prowse unleashes a powerful effort from range but Islian Meslier deals with the shot with ease.
Oriel Romeu, who has been a warrior for Southampton this season, cannot continue and hits the deck. Shame for the visitors, who are looking dangerous through his runs and tackles.
OFF THE LINE! Jannik Vestergaard powers a header on target but Patrick Bamford does enough to clear the ball off the line. So close.
Raphinha is at the heart of the Leeds attack again as he cuts the ball back to Diego Llorente but McCarthy pulls out a wonderful save.
Oriel Romeu goes on a powerful run and finds Che Adams inside the Leeds box but his effort is well blocked by Liam Cooper.
Takumi Minamino and Danny Ings are coming on.

GOAL FOR LEEDS! Patrick Bamford shows great composure outside the box and shoots across goal into the far bottom corner. Wonderful run from the striker and a great finish.
An early half chance for Southampton after good work from Che Adams. He sets up Nathan Redmond who can't test Meslier.
And we are back underway.
Half time.
Even though there haven't been any goals, this has been a very entertaining game. The biggest talking point will be Che Adams' disallowed goal just before the break.
Che Adams has the ball in the back of the net but it does not count. It looked like they caught Leeds out with a quick free kick but Andre Marriner brought it back. Southampton players are furious!
Three added minutes.
The ball has to be changed as it appears the football they were using had gone flat. Just a couple minutes until the break. It's been a great contest.
WHAT A TACKLE! INCREDIBLE FROM ORIEL ROMEU! Raphinha has the whole Southampton half to himself and closes in on the Saints goal. Out of nowhere, the midfielder makes the most incredible recovery tackle. Simply outstanding.
Nathan Tella shows great footwork and goes down in a collision with Diego Llorente. VAR review. It looks like Tella kicks the Leeds defender, does not look like a foul.
After a review, no penalty is given.
That was a huge chance for Southampton but it is brought back for handball! Ryan Bertrand is one-on-one but has his effort well saved. It wouldn't have counted anyway.
CHANCE FOR LEEDS! Raphinha whips the cross to Diego Llorente, who heads the ball into the danger area but Liam Cooper can't find the net and his effort is tipped over the bar.
Jannik Vestagaard goes into the book for tripping Tyler Roberts 30 yards from goal. Leeds are growing into the game now.
CHANCE FOR LEEDS! Wonderful work by Raphinha, who beats two defenders and sets up Tyler Roberts around 15 yards out but the Welshman skies the effort. Should have done better.
Jack Harrison is in a dangerous position out wide and tries to find Patrick Bamford in the box but Jannik Vestergaard does well yet again.
Patrick Bamford goes down in the box after a collision with Jannik Vestergaard and rightfully so nothing is given. Great work from the Saints defender.
Patrick Bamford looks to be in on goal but the recovering Ryan Bertrand makes a crucial tackle before the Leeds striker can shoot.
Then up the other end, Nathan Tella is in a similar situation and Luke Ayling comes to the rescue.
The pitch is cutting up horribly at Elland Road and players are slipping all over the place.
Southampton are enjoying plenty of possession but Leeds are putting on a high press here. James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Tella are looking dangerous in midfield.
The match is being played at a very high pace and possession is constantly changing in midfield.
It looked like Patrick Bamford was found by Raphinha, but he was offside.
Nathan Tella glides past Liam Cooper outside the box and creates a great chance for himself but doesn't test Islian Meslier in the Leeds goal. Lively from the visitors.
CHANCE FOR SOUTHAMPTON! James Ward-Prowse whips in a free kick to the box and Vesteragaard heads just wide. That was a great opportunity.
The first attack from Leeds almost creates a great chance. Tyler Roberts finds Patrick Bamford 20 yards out from goal and the striker tries to complete the one-two inside the box but his pass is heavy.
A positive start from Southampton. Nathan Redmond finds Che Adams out wide but Leeds defend well. The visitors look to be putting a high press here.
And we are underway at Elland Road. Should be an entertaining 90 minutes ahead.
The players are returning to the changing rooms and will emerge shortly ahead of kick off. Stay tuned for all the action.
The scene is set at Elland Road ahead of this Tuesday night Premier League fixture. The players have arrived and are getting underway with their warm ups.
Statistically, Bielsa's side are actually better away from home this season. They have taken 14 points at home, and 18 points on the road.
Leeds have won in each of their last four Premier league matches that top goalscorer Patrick Bamford has netted in.
The abrasive No9 has scored 12 goals this season, along with five assists, as he finally looks settled in the topflight after several unsuccessful loans.
Gareth Southgate will be watching on intently as he starts for the hosts this evening.
It can never be easy trying to find the guts to bounce back from a 9-0 defeat. So imagine trying to do it twice!
It has been no secret that Southampton have really struggled recently and have failed to win any of their last seven league matches.
A win tonight would see them leapfrog Leeds and create a healthy gap between them and the drop zone.
With the free-flowing, attacking-minded style of play that Marcelo Bielsa promotes with Leeds United, consistency in the topflight was always going to be hard to come by.
They have now lost their previous two matches against Wolves and Arsenal and have proved extremely unpredictable since the turn of the year.
They are currently 12th in the Premier League and look destined for mid table by the end of the season - and a win today would keep them a healthy distance from any late drama. Not bad for their first year back in the big time.
