Director James Gunn reportedly working on a secretive DC Extended Universe movie
While fans await director James Gunn's return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and Guardians of the Galaxy 3, it seems he's not quite done with the DC Extended Universe yet.
The 56-year-old filmmaker doesn't officially have a new DC project yet, a new report from The Hollywood Reporter claims he's 'angling' for a future DC project.
While it's unclear what project he might be eyeing, he's apparently doing so with producer Peter Safran.

Gunn and Safran had previously teamed on 2021's The Suicide Squad and The Peacemaker TV series, plus Gunn's 2016 indie thriller The Belko Experiment.
Safran is well-established within the DCEU, also producing Aquaman, Shazam! and their respective upcoming sequels - Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom - both expected in 2023.
Warner Bros. wouldn't comment on the story, though sources are confirming that DC's IP assets are being 'carved up' for the taking, with one insider claiming, 'DC is definitely in play.'

Whatever projects Gunn and Safran are eyeing, they would be on the back burner, as they're expected to focus on Season 2 of HBO Max's The Peacemaker.
HBO Max renewed The Peacemaker for a second season just a day before the show debuted in February.
It was also confirmed that Gunn would both write and direct all eight episodes of The Peacemaker Season 2, though it's currently unclear when that will start production.

Gunn was firmly entrenched in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with his successful 2014 movie Guardians of the Galaxy and its 2017 sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
The filmmaker was surprisingly let go by Disney in July 2018 for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, after a series of off-color jokes he had tweeted many years ago that had recently re-surfaced.
After Disney let him go, he was brought on in October 2018 to write and direct The Suicide Squad, which was released in August 2021.
