Sam Smith looks elated as they have their portrait drawn in the street while out with friends in New York City

Sam Smith looked elated after having their portrait drawn while out in New York City on Thursday.

The musician, 31, who has declared a preference for 'they/them' pronouns, took a seat in the street while artist, Devon Rodriguez, got to work.

Sam smiled as he proudly showed off the incredible pencil portrait to his friends afterwards.

Devon, from the Bronx, gained notoriety after spending hours traveling on the subway every day in search of people to draw for his 'COVID mask subway drawing' series in 2020.

The talented 28-year-old is known for sketching his unsuspecting fellow passengers while sitting near them on the train, then surprising them with the portrait.

During the outing Sam wore a shimmery pinstriped shirt layered over a plain white T-shirt and baggy denim shorts.

Devon is the most followed artist online with 58 million followers across his platforms.

'The first subway drawing I did was because my 9th grade art teacher, Jeremy Harper, used to show me his sketchbooks from when he was a student and they were filled with subway drawings,' he told Jam Press in 2020.

'They inspired me so much and he convinced me that it was a great way to practice.'

A native New-Yorker, the full-time artist stayed in the city throughout the coronavirus pandemic, and like nearly all New Yorkers who were able to, he stayed home for the first several months.

He was thankful to be able to go back out onto the subway in the summer of 2020 to document the reality of COVID-19 up close and personal.

Meanwhile, Sam was reportedly turned away from a Met Gala afterparty last month - despite staying in the same hotel where the bash was held.

The singer is said to have tried unsuccessfully to get into the Macallan party at New York's Mark Hotel and left in a 'polite' fashion after being denied.

Sources say Sam was repeatedly told: 'You’re not on the list, you can’t come in,' and eventually gave up and went to Dua Lipa's party instead.

'They gave them a flat out "no." They tried three times,' a source informed Page Six. 'They walked out surprised. But Sam was totally cool and polite.'

DailyMail.com has reached out to Smith's reps for comment and have yet to hear back.

Christian and Sam supposedly went to several Met Gala afterparties after being refused entry at the Macallan event, and 'kept the dance floor smoking hot.'
