Batwoman viewers remain mystified over the fate of Ruby Rose's original superhero Kate Kane as showrunner insists she's not dead
She shocked fans and industry veterans alike when she walked away from the titular character of her hit show after just one season.
And now viewers of Batwoman season two are left wondering what happened to Kate Kane, season one’s Batsuited superheroine played by Ruby Rose.
While the season two premiere featured newcomer Javicia Leslie playing Ryan Wilder, a.k.a. the new Batwoman, it did little to provide a definitive answer to the question posed by the episode’s title: 'What happened to Kate Kane?'

Mystery: Viewers of Batwoman season two are left wondering what happened to Kate Kane, season one’s Batsuited superheroine played by Ruby Rose
The opening element of Sunday's season premiere was a shocking plane crash which suggested that Kate had died.
That suggestion was further cemented when Leslie‘s Wilder happens upon Kane’s Batsuit amid the jet wreckage.
However, Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries has repeatedly insisted that Ruby’s character would never be killed off, in spite of the actress having definitively left the show last year.

'As a lesbian who’s been working as a writer for the past fifteen years, I’m well aware of the "Bury Your Gays" trope and I have no interest in participating in it,' Caroline said last June.
'Like you, I love Kate Kane – she’s the reason I wanted to do the show. We’ll never erase her,' she later added.
'In fact, her disappearance will be one of the mysteries of season two. I don’t want to give away any of our surprises, but to all our devoted fans, please know that LGBTQ+ justice is at the very core of what Batwoman is and we have no intention of abandoning that.'

Dries reiterated these comments last week ahead of the season two premiere of the CW series, at a press day for the show by the Television Critics Association.
She said the story of what happened to Kate 'will be a lot of twists and turns, it will be a huge roller coaster for all of our characters.'
And if taken at her word, it means the convenient death-by-plane-crash explanation is most definitely not Kate Kane‘s ultimate fate.

As for the rest of the characters on Batwoman, including Dougray Scott's Colonel (and Kate's father) Jacob Kane, they currently believe her to be dead.
Only time will tell what those 'twists and turns' will be, and if Ruby decides to come back to the show in a surprise move even if just for a brief guest stint.
Batwoman airs on The CW on Sunday nights at 8 pm ET.
