Vice President Kamala Harris is promising to work to eliminate federal taxes on tips paid to restaurant workers and scores of other service employees. That echoes a pledge that her opponent in November, Donald Trump, has made, in a rare moment of political overlap from both sides. Harris made the announcement Saturday at a rally on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where the economy relies heavily on the hotel, restaurant and entertainment industries. Trump made a similar promise at his own rally in the city in June. He accused Harris on Saturday of copying his pledge, adding, “she has no ideas, she can only steal from me.”

A worker at a federal prison in California has died and investigators are examining whether he was exposed to fentanyl shortly before his death. That's according to three people familiar with the matter who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. Marc Fischer was a mailroom supervisor at the U.S. Penitentiary in Atwater, California, who reported feeling ill and was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead later. Investigators are examining whether Fisher was exposed to a substance authorities believe was fentanyl while screening mail at the prison. The agency says a second worker sent to the hospital after coming in contact with the mail was later released.

A Defense Department disagreement over how to bring to justice the accused mastermind of the 9/11 attacks and four others has thrown the cases into disarray. That disagreement has also surfaced the tension between the desire of some victims’ families to see a final legal reckoning and the significant obstacles that may make that impossible. Many want to see the defendants convicted and sentenced in their death penalty cases. But many experts say the legal obstacles caused by torture, disputes over evidence and other issues make it unrealistic to expect a conclusion anytime soon. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin recently revoked a plea deal with the accused Sept. 11 mastermind and two others.

Vice President Kamala Harris drew on her prosecutorial background to make her first expansive pitch on immigration to border-state voters as she and her new running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, attracted thousands to a campaign rally in Arizona during their tour of battleground states. Harris, the former attorney general of California, reminded the crowd that she as a law enforcement official targeted transnational gangs, drug cartels and smugglers. “I prosecuted them in case after case, and I won,” Harris said in front of a crowd of more than 15,000 in Glendale, a suburb of Phoenix. “So I know what I’m talking about.”

A local police officer told a fellow officer after the attempted assassination of Donald Trump that he warned the Secret Service days earlier that the building where the 20-year-old gunman opened fire needed to be secured. Videos show frustration among local law enforcement at how Thomas Matthew Crooks managed to slip away from their view, scale a roof and open fire with AR-style rifle shortly after Trump starting speaking. Trump was struck in the ear but avoided serious injury. One spectator was killed and two others were injured.

If Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz officially steps down later this year to accept the position of U.S. vice president, Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan would become the first Native woman to govern a state. Flanagan, a member of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe, became the highest ranking Native American statewide official in the country when she was elected to office in 2018, and she has helped shape Walz’s administration as one focused on improving tribal sovereignty and autonomy across Minnesota. She is one of several Indigenous women who have taken seats of power in the U.S. over the last decade, and many in Indian Country see her rise to power as an opportunity for increased Indigenous rights and visibility.

There was no immediate word from Hamas.

Donald Trump has recommitted to debating Vice President Kamala Harris after recently backing out. The Republican presidential nominee held a lengthy news conference Thursday in which he taunted his new rival, boasted of his crowd on Jan. 6, 2021, and lashed out at questions about the enthusiasm her campaign has been generating. As he addressed reporters at his Palm Beach, Florida, estate, ABC announced that Trump and Harris have agreed to a Sept. 10 presidential debate. In taking questions from reporters for more than an hour, Trump tried to draw a contrast with Harris, who has not held a news conference since she became the likely Democratic nominee following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race.

Republicans are questioning Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz’s characterization of his time in uniform and his departure from military service. Walz served a total of 24 years in the Army National Guard before retiring in 2005. As he ramped up for a congressional bid in 2005, Walz’s campaign in March issued a statement saying he still planned to run despite a possible mobilization of Minnesota National Guard soldiers to Iraq. Walz retired from service in May of that year, according to the Guard. A mobilization order for his unit was issued in August 2005. The unit mobilized in October and was deployed to Iraq in March 2006.

The Texas Rangers have visited the White House to celebrate their 2023 World Series victory with President Joe Biden. He noted during the Thursday visit that the team was making a triumphant return to the city where the franchise was born. “You're back in the nation’s capital as world champions,” said Biden, referencing a team that was once the Washington Senators before it moved to Texas in 1972. It’s a long-standing tradition for championship teams to come to the White House. The visit also meant a rare public appearance by Biden since his July 21 announcement that he was dropping his bid for reelection.

The Perseid meteor shower reaches its peak early Monday. Astronomers say it's one of the brightest and most easily visible showers of the year. This year’s peak activity coincides with a moon that is 44% full. More than 50 meteors should be visible per hour in rural areas away from city lights. Experts say the meteors will look like “fireballs” in the night sky. The Northern Hemisphere will have the best view. The Perseids last through Sept. 1. Multiple meteor showers occur annually and you don’t need special equipment to see them.

A poll shows that most Americans believe this year's presidential race will be crucial for the future of the country's democracy. The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs survey finds that they see the threat differently based on their political leanings. Nearly 6 in 10 Democrats say the November election is “extremely important” to the future of U.S. democracy, compared to about 4 in 10 independents and Republicans. Many Democrats continue to view former President Donald Trump as a threat to democracy after he tried to overturn the results of the 2020 election. But the results also suggest that many of Trump’s supporters agree with him that President Joe Biden is the real threat to democracy.
