As a gunman shot and killed 19 students and two teachers at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, terrified pupils and staff members made frantic calls to 911. One student told an operator that there were “a lot” of bodies as she begged for help, saying, “Please, I don’t want to die.” The calls from the May 24, 2022, shooting at Robb Elementary School were included in a massive collection of audio and video recordings released by Uvalde city officials Saturday after a prolonged legal fight. The Associated Press and other news organizations brought a lawsuit after the officials initially refused to publicly release the information from one of the worst school shootings in U.S. history.

The International Gymnastics Federation restored Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu to third in the women’s floor exercise final on Saturday, potentially forcing American gymnast Jordan Chiles to return the bronze she won in the event. It’s unclear whether Chiles will be forced to return her medal. The federation, known as FIG, said while it has restored the initial order of finish — with Barbosu third, Romanian teammate Sabrina Maneca-Voinea fourth and Chiles fifth — the organization added that the allocation of medals was up to the International Olympic Committee.

Stephen Curry was thinking about this two years ago, after winning his fourth NBA title. The only thing left for him to win was Olympic gold. And in the ultimate moment, he made sure that medal would be his. The U.S. is atop the international men's basketball world once again, after Curry scored 24 points and led the way to a 98-87 win over France in the final at the Paris Games on Saturday night. It was the fifth consecutive gold medal for the U.S. — and the 17th in 20 all-time appearances for the Americans at the games.

A scathing Justice Department report into law enforcement failures during the Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde, Texas, included a minute-by-minute account of missteps by police at the scene. Heavily armed officers did not kill the 18-year-old gunman until about 77 minutes after the first officers arrived at the school. During that time, terrified students in the classrooms called 911 and parents begged officers to go in and save them. Nineteen children and two teachers were killed during the May 24, 2022, massacre in the rural South Texas town.

A large geological feature in southern Utah known as the “Double Arch,” the “Hole in the Roof” and sometimes the “Toilet Bowl” has collapsed. National Park Service officials said Friday that no injuries were reported. The popular arch in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area fell Thursday. Park rangers suspect changing water levels and erosion from waves in Lake Powell contributed to its demise. The arch was formed from 190 million-year-old Navajo sandstone originating in the late Triassic to early Jurassic periods. The fine-grained sandstone has endured erosion from weather, wind and rain.

A worker at a federal prison in California has died and investigators are examining whether he was exposed to fentanyl shortly before his death. That's according to three people familiar with the matter who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. Marc Fischer was a mailroom supervisor at the U.S. Penitentiary in Atwater, California, who reported feeling ill and was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead later. Investigators are examining whether Fisher was exposed to a substance authorities believe was fentanyl while screening mail at the prison. The agency says a second worker sent to the hospital after coming in contact with the mail was later released.

A Defense Department disagreement over how to bring to justice the accused mastermind of the 9/11 attacks and four others has thrown the cases into disarray. That disagreement has also surfaced the tension between the desire of some victims’ families to see a final legal reckoning and the significant obstacles that may make that impossible. Many want to see the defendants convicted and sentenced in their death penalty cases. But many experts say the legal obstacles caused by torture, disputes over evidence and other issues make it unrealistic to expect a conclusion anytime soon. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin recently revoked a plea deal with the accused Sept. 11 mastermind and two others.

The grueling basic training for fledgling cadets at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, known as swab summer, is being revamped this year in light of a sexual abuse scandal that has rocked the prestigious Connecticut service academy. It's one of seven “directed actions” the academy was ordered to take last year after CNN first reported how a little-known six-year internal investigation, completed in 2020, found 102 separate allegations of sexual assault involving cadets from 1990 to 2006. The report determined that the academy often mishandled the cases. The entire Coast Guard, including the academy, has been tasked with taking 33 initial actions.

Vice President Kamala Harris drew on her prosecutorial background to make her first expansive pitch on immigration to border-state voters as she and her new running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, attracted thousands to a campaign rally in Arizona during their tour of battleground states. Harris, the former attorney general of California, reminded the crowd that she as a law enforcement official targeted transnational gangs, drug cartels and smugglers. “I prosecuted them in case after case, and I won,” Harris said in front of a crowd of more than 15,000 in Glendale, a suburb of Phoenix. “So I know what I’m talking about.”

Beau Hossler shot a 10-under 60 on Friday in the rain-delayed Wyndham Championship, squandering a chance for a sub-60 round with pars on the last three holes at soft and vulnerable Sedgefield Country Club. Hossler had a two-stroke lead over Billy Horschel in the tournament that started a day late after heavy rain and wind from Tropical Storm Debby washed out play Thursday. Play also was delayed Friday, with Horschel among the 66 afternoon starters unable to finish the round because of darkness. He had two holes left. With players allowed to lift, clean and place their golf balls in the fairways, Hossler was 6 under after a tap-in eagle on the par-5 fifth and birdied the par-4 eighth in a front-nine 28.
