22 Best Concealer for Mature Skin, According to Experts & Reviewers
Finding the best concealer for mature skin is no easy feat, since many standby formulas can begin to crease, look dry, or settle into lines around the eyes. According to Marina Peredo, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in NYC, mature skin—fine lines, wrinkles, thinning skin, loss of elasticity, or all of the above–results from a combination of genetics and environment. In other words, it’s how all skin types age. What’s more, mature skin tends to be prone to dryness because the skin barrier doesn’t function as well over time, says Diane Madfes, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City,
Because of this, it’s important to use a formula that can adequately cover up age spots, undereye circles, and blemishes without settling into fine lines or exacerbating dullness. How do you keep concealer from settling in wrinkles?
As with the best foundation for mature skin, stick with concealers packed with skin care ingredients designed to replenish and protect the skin barrier, such as ceramides, peptides, and antioxidants. Meanwhile, humectants like hyaluronic acid and glycerin can help hydrate dry skin and, in turn, improve the appearance of fine lines and even hyperpigmentation.
Dr. Peredo also recommends that those with mature skin swap out drier powder or solid formulas for either liquid or cream concealers. “Using a thinner consistency is better than using a thicker one, because it’s less likely to settle into fine lines or creases,” she explains.
Once you’ve got your formula in hand, make sure you have the right makeup brushes and sponges. When makeup artist Kasey Spickard works with clients who have mature skin, he says he’ll warm up the product on the back of his hand, then work it in light layers with a brush, and then buff out with a Beautyblender.
How do you cover dark undereye circles with mature skin?
“The best way to cover dark undereye circles is to first neutralize the area by applying foundation before concealer,” says makeup artist Tomy Rivero. That way you correct color without building up too much product under the eyes.
