“Big bet philanthropy” is the practice of making multimillion-dollar investments in a single nonprofit. The goal is to transform the sector, an issue, or organization by giving the money needed to really make an impact. Cecilia Conrad, CEO at Lever for Change, shares what their organization has learned from making "big bets." 1. Rely on experts to move resources efficiently: instead of creating their own foundation, ultra-high-net-worth individuals can work with existing organizations that have the infrastructure and experience. 2. Trust in collaborative relationships: this means leaving space for grantees to define problems and solutions impacting their work, guide donors on effective ways to measure impact, and minimize report writing. 3. De-risk investments:  Strategic vetting and due diligence by donor collaboratives and organizations like Lever for Change can minimize risk. 4. Give in proportion to the challenge, not organization size. Funders can help build the capacity of small organizations to use the funds effectively.   5. Lift up issues with prize philanthropy: well-designed competitions can elevate important issues and the organizations best placed to address them. 6. Give while you live: more ultra-high-net-worth individuals are giving most of their fortunes away while they’re alive.
