The Chicago Park District's Jackson Park Golf Course is celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2024. The popular Tom Bendelow-designed municipal course opened on May 11, 1899 and has a history that reads like a golf encyclopedia. Named after Former President Andrew Jackson, Jackson Park Golf Course was built on land that hosted the 1893 World’s Fair and is part of the larger Jackson Park, which extends along Lake Michigan on Chicago’s South Side. When Jackson Park Golf Course opened in 1899, it was the first public golf course west of the Allegheny Mountains and was free to play. The course has been the host venue for the Chicago City Amateur for 119 years, an event won five times by golf legend and Evans Scholarship founder, Charles “Chick” Evans. Long a beacon for inclusivity, Jackson Park has been the home of numerous African-American golfers and leagues, most notably the Bob-O-Links Junior Golf Club for children ages 8 to 17. Bob-O-Links was founded by the Chicago Women’s Golf Club, the oldest African-American women’s golf club in the nation, in 1954. In addition, the Jackson Park Golf Association (JPGA) was created in 1989 as an anchor for minorities’ long-standing use of the course. “We had Tiger Woods join us in 1994 as an example for our young people, and our work continues into the future as we provide college scholarships and more opportunities. Troon Privé, the private club operating division of Troon, will manage club operations, agronomy, food & beverage, and membership sales and marketing. “As Woodholme approached its 100th anniversary, the Board felt strongly that, like many other golf clubs, Woodholme could benefit from having an experienced management partner on its team,” said Woodholme Country Club Board President Arthur Adler. “As Troon is by far the best of class in golf club management, the Board’s decision was an easy one. We are excited to share that Monique “Mo” Gesualdi, PGA and LPGA Director of Instruction at St. Johns Golf & Country Club in St. Augustine, Florida, has been named “2024 Troon Coach of the Year” by Troon’s Education and Player Development team. Gesualdi oversees the golf instruction program at The Golf Academy at St. Johns while coaching juniors, women and men to reach their highest potential by getting their mind, body and swing all working together. This is an indication of the depth of quality and caring teaching professionals at Troon-managed facilities,” said Troon Global Director of Education and Coaching, Tim Mahoney. “Monique exemplifies the characteristics of the elite coach: humility, motivator, caring, listener and relationship builder. This award could be named after Monique. Congratulations Mo!” Gesualdi has been Director of Instruction at St. Johns Golf & Country Club since May of 2021 and is a two-time winner of the North Florida PGA Youth Player Development Award Winner (2023, 2024). In her teaching, “Coach Mo” takes a holistic coaching approach, focusing on understanding each player’s individual swing tendencies, physical condition, mental approach, nutritional habits, and other factors. This approach aims to optimize performance by addressing all aspects of a player’s development. Gesualdi believes in ensuring cohesion among the developmental team, parents, and the player is essential for the player’s success.
