International media organizations covering the Middle East encountered unexpected changes in covering the 2009 demonstrations in Iran due to the wide availability of camera-equipped mobile phones and the expulsion of most foreign journalists. The death of Neda Agha-Soltan in June 2009, captured vividly on mobile camera phones, provided journalists around the world with a focal point for their coverage. Using data compiled from 2009 coverage posted to the internet by the BBC, Al Jazeera English and RT (formerly Russia Today), multiple framings of both Iran and Middle Eastern coverage used by the three organizations are analyzed. In the opinion of the author, the widespread availability of camera-equipped mobile phones in 2009 Tehran forced the BBC and Al Jazeera to essentially “surrender” control of raw footage to middle-class Tehranis, while RT opted for a primarily Russian-nationalist frame of coverage that serves as a counterpoint.
