What does it actually take to survive nature’s harshest elements? Many would argue that pulling through extreme conditions is all about individual skill and determination; with enough grit, experience and luck, even a lone wolf can survive the toughest environments. But what happens when that lone wolf is forced to join a pack?
“Outlast is about people's self-preservation versus their loyalty to others,” executive producer Grant Kahler (Alone, Castaways) tells Tudum. “It's greed and desire to win versus compassion and empathy. I think everyone has that angel and demon on their shoulders.”
In the new eight-episode series, 16 lone-wolves try to outlast the Alaskan wilderness with only one rule: They have to be part of a team to win. In this exclusive first look, players arrive along the banks of the Neka river with varying degrees of survival skills, all of them prepared to do whatever it takes to bring home the prize.
All 16 players are dropped by parachute in the middle of the Alaskan wilderness during the fall — in other words, right when the threat of rain, freezing temperatures and bears becomes more real as winter draws closer. After they arrive, the players learn that they won’t be competing on their own; instead, they’ll need to split up into four different teams, and each team has to set up camp in a different location. Though each individual has a strong set of survival skills, they’re required to work together as a team to win the million-dollar prize.

In order to win the million-dollar prize, no one individual can work alone; each has to put their faith in complete strangers to survive the unforgiving Alaskan wilderness as a team. Players can change teams at any time, leading to unexpected alliances, selfish maneuvers and decisions that could make or break each team’s ability to survive. There’s no voting out of players in Outlast, either — the only way out is to give up.
Find out who the winners of Outlast are and what they had to say about the grueling competition here. And if you also want to hear from the team who risked everything to only nearly make it, you can check that out here.
