Watch the First 10 Minutes of 'Griselda,' Starring Sofía Vergara - Netflix Tudum

La Jefa has arrived.
In the first 10 minutes of the upcoming drama series Griselda, a woman rushes through the door of her palatial home, running up the wrought iron–lined stairway toward the bathroom. At the top of the stairs, she winces in pain and grabs her abdomen. She looks down. There is blood on her hands.
And so we are introduced to Sofía Vergara’s Griselda Blanco, the central character of the upcoming series Griselda, which debuts on Netflix Jan. 25 and follows the exploits of the ambitious Colombian businesswoman who created one of the most profitable cartels in history.

As the preview clip continues, Griselda stumbles inside the bathroom, rummages through toiletries, then presses a menstrual pad to her side wound. She affixes it with children’s Band-Aids, chomps a handful of painkillers, and looks intensely into the mirror. Violence has truly come home…
Starring and executive produced by Vergara, Griselda is created by Narcos and Narcos: Mexico showrunner Eric Newman (Painkiller), who comes to the title alongside Narcos director Andrés Baiz, who directs all six episodes. The series is co-created by Doug Miro, Ingrid Escajeda, and Carlo Bernard and executive produced by Newman, Miro, Escajeda, Bernard, along with Vergara and Luis Balaguer with Latin World Entertainment.
“From the earliest days of my research for what became Narcos, [Griselda] leapt out at me as a fascinating character,” Newman previously told Tudum. “I have always endeavored to humanize complicated people, many of whom have been considered evil, and Griselda offered both the greatest challenge and opportunity.”
In addition to Vergara, Griselda also stars Alberto Guerra, Christian Tappan, Martín Rodríguez, Juliana Aidén Martinez, Vanessa Ferlito, and, making her on-screen debut, Carolina Giraldo Navarro (aka Karol G).
A devoted mother, Blanco’s lethal blend of charm and unexpected savagery helped her expertly navigate between family and business in ’70s and ’80s Miami, leading her to become widely known as the “the godmother.”
Her moniker elevates her to the status of mythical mafia boss, but at home, Griselda’s known as mamá. As the scene continues, we see her round up her sons Uber (Jose Velazquez), Osvaldo (Martín Fajardo), and Dixon (Orlando Pineda) and load them into her golden car. She reveals the plan to leave Medellín and flee to her friend Carmen’s (Ferlito) small home in Miami. Carmen has also escaped the hands of an abusive husband involved in the drug trade. “There’s a lot of women who leave the man, but not the life,” she cautiously warns. Blanco wants to join her friend’s travel agency and start her life over to go clean. Or so she says…
Moments later at home, we see Blanco unpack a teddy bear from her luggage and rest it by her sleeping son’s head. Then she reveals a hefty block of cocaine.
So maybe she didn’t quite leave that life after all…
Griselda premieres on Netflix on Jan. 25. Watch the first scene above.
