Buckle up — and check your phone battery — because The Night Agent Season 2 is calling. The show was renewed for another 10 episodes and will star returning cast members Gabriel Basso and Luciane Buchanan, plus newcomers including Brittany Snow and Teddy Sears.

Based on the novel by Matthew Quirk, The Night Agent follows Peter Sutherland (Basso), a low-level FBI agent who works in the basement of the White House, manning a phone that never rings — until the night that it does, propelling him into a fast-moving and dangerous conspiracy that ultimately leads all the way to the Oval Office. The series debuted at No. 1 on the English TV List with 168.71 million hours viewed in its first week of release, appearing in the Top 10 in 93 countries.

Key art for ‘The Night Agent’ Season 2

Creator and showrunner Shawn Ryan said in a statement at the time of the Season 2 renewal, “To see the tremendous reaction to the show has been a great joy and is a credit to our cast, our writers, our directors, our crew and our partners at Sony Pictures Television and Netflix. We couldn’t be any prouder or more excited to get cracking on Season 2 to share the further adventures of Night Action with our newfound fans.”

Is Season 2 of The Night Agent filming?

They sure are — the team shared a new snap of Basso on set and a video of the star flying high in a helicopter to mark the start of production on the new season.

How did Season 1 of The Night Agent end?

In the last scene of the finale, things are finally looking up for Peter — literally. He’s on a jet heading to his first mission as a night agent; Night Action is an “off the books” program under the president that investigates the cases that traditional intelligence agencies can’t figure out.

Peter’s night agent promotion is his reward for unraveling a terrorist conspiracy within the walls of the White House and saving the life of President Michelle Travers (Kari Matchett). Peter’s love interest, former Silicon Valley CEO Rose Larkin (Buchanan), is the one who walks him across the tarmac before his high-flying (and spying) escapade.

But what does Peter’s new job mean for the couple?

“That’s one of the big questions we’d love to answer in Season 2,” said Ryan. “What does Peter getting on this plane and going somewhere (presumably overseas to enter into some new wild adventure) mean, with Rose going back to California to try to pursue her Silicon Valley dreams again? We certainly have some initial ideas.”

What does the cast want to see in The Night Agent Season 2?

Details about Season 2’s story are highly classified right now; however, the show’s cast offered some initial thoughts about where their characters’ heads might be after the Season 1 finale.

For her part, Buchanan believed Rose would love to pursue her tech goals again. “I really hope that she continues on her journey,” said Buchanan. “[The ending] leaves it really open-ended… I also want closure for her. I’m like, ‘This girl needs a lot of therapy after everything she’s been through.’ ”

At least two of the individuals who caused those therapy bills are still on the loose. Disgraced presidential chief of staff Diane Farr (Hong Chau) survived a gunshot wound in the finale and nefarious mogul Gordon Wick (Ben Cotton) slithered away from consequences.

“We liked the idea that this wasn’t so clean,” Ryan said about Wick’s escape. “That there is one person who, because of his resources and everything, is able to slink away. Maybe we’ll deal with him again in some way.”

And Peter certainly still has his eyes on Farr. “Due to his belief in due process, he’s not going to be bummed she’s alive,” Basso conceded. “But if Farr eludes justice, he’ll be a little more wary of Travers. To be a traitor and not receive justice is not OK with Peter.”

With Peter directly serving at the pleasure of the President as a night agent, the stakes will be higher than ever in Season 2.

“We’re proud to see The Night Agent deliver a breakout performance and become instantly embraced around the world,” Jimmy Howe, Vice President of Drama Series, Netflix, said in a statement at the time of the series’ renewal. “Shawn Ryan has created a spy thriller sensation that viewers cannot get enough of, with a stellar cast featuring Gabriel Basso, Luciane Buchanan, and Hong Chau, and we’re here to bring them more of the action and suspense they love.”

Sony Pictures Television President Katherine Pope added, “We are thrilled to see The Night Agent become an instant global sensation and can’t wait to continue telling this story with our remarkable cast, creative leader, Shawn Ryan and our wonderful partners at Netflix.”

Who will star in The Night Agent Season 2 cast?

In addition to Basso and Buchanan, Amanda Warren is joining the cast as Catherine, a veteran of the top secret Night Action investigative program who trains and oversees various Night Agents, including new recruit Peter Sutherland. Smart, private, and determined, Catherine is a fierce defender of her agents, but finds it difficult to earn Peter’s trust when he struggles with betrayal issues from his experiences in Season 1.

Joining Warren as series regulars in Season 2 are: Arienne Mandi (Tatami) as Noor, a low-level aide in the Iranian mission to the United Nations in New York looking to leverage her access to top secret information into a better life for her and her family; Louis Herthum (Westworld) is Jacob Monroe, an international businessman with powerful global connections that he uses to obtain valuable information; Berto Colon (Power Book II: Ghost, Orange Is the New Black) will play Solomon, a former Marine turned right-hand man/fixer for a powerful businessman; Michael Malarkey (The Vampire Diaries, Project Blue Book) as Markus, a trained military leader loyal to his dictator uncle who was recently convicted in the Hague of war crimes; and Keon Alexander (The Expanse, Tyrant) as Javad, the head of security for the Iranian mission to the United Nations who is responsible for not only protecting the mission employees, but also ensuring they stay loyal to the regime.

Other new cast additions include Brittany Snow (X, Pitch Perfect) as Alice, Peter’s partner and mentor in his first assignment in Night Action; Teddy Sears (Raising the Bar, Masters of Sex) as Warren, a high-level intelligence officer who becomes the subject of a Night Action investigation; Navid Negahban (Tehran, The Old Man, Homeland) as Abbas, the distinguished and measured Iranian ambassador to the UN who is accustomed to giving orders, and expects loyalty and respect; and Rob Heaps (Partner Track, Imposters) as Tomas, a British-educated, rich, entitled but driven man who is desperate to return his family to power after his dictator father’s conviction for war crimes.
