Dozens of fresh spinach products are being recalled as they may cause food poisoning.
New York based Solata Foods LLC is voluntarily recalling more than 40 products due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that when consumed can make people ill and can sometimes cause "fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems." The issue was discovered during testing by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Market Food Inspectors.

In all, 41 products are subject to the recall. They were distributed in stores in New York only. All packages have lot numbers 40606 and 11006 on the packaging with an expiration date of June 20 or June 24, 2024 printed on the side.

An infection with listeria can lead to a range of unpleasant symptoms, sometimes resulting in serious illness. Signs of a listeria infection include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.

In more vulnerable individuals, such as the very young, elderly, and those with weakened immune systems, infections can be much more serious, whereas most healthy people will make a full recovery. If a more serious infection occurs, it can result in a headache, a stiff neck, loss of balance, confusion and convulsions.

An estimated 1,600 people get listeriosis each year, and about 260 die as a result, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
