Critics Consensus

As gut-wrenching as it is inspirational, 127 Hours unites one of Danny Boyle's most beautifully exuberant directorial efforts with a terrific performance from James Franco.

Deborah Ross The Spectator This may be a great film, and an ingenious film, but only if you've the stomach for it. Aug 30, 2018 Full Review Kaleem Aftab Independent (UK) Any film that relies on one actor to carry the movie demands a lot of its leading man but James Franco applies a youthful exuberance that makes him so watchable it's all viewers could do not to blink. May 15, 2018 Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online Franco... delivers a solid performance as the strapping climber who shows his vulnerability when he reflects back on his life--the mistakes he's made and the moments he may miss. Rated: B Sep 11, 2017 Full Review Danilo Castro Next Best Picture Survival films are generally difficult to watch, given their dire subject matters, and there times when hitting standard dramatic beats inhibits the film’s creative flow, but “127 Hours” is about as entertaining and exciting as the genre gets. Rated: 8/10 May 27, 2024 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review In the wrong hands, the story could have easily been toned down to movie-of-the-week quality banality. But the presentation is pure cinema, designed to create the illusion of motion and progress in otherwise stationary circumstances. Rated: 4/4 Aug 3, 2023 Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) It's the best movie one would want to watch with their eyes closed. stephen b Considering the limited subject matter and setting, I think the filmmaker made the most of what there was to work with. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/19/24 Full Review Adrian G Me gusto bastante, esta película te da mucha inspiración para salir de momentos malos. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/11/24 Full Review Ryan B A times this movie is vaguely comical which adds as relief for the more hard hitting moments. A good mix of moments from the the 127 hour ordeal that Aron had to endure & it’s all portrayed by Franco so well. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/07/24 Full Review Devin B This kind of film is hard to pull off but they definitely do especially with the great performance from James Franco! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/09/24 Full Review Shaun E The fact that 127 hours was based on a true story was enough to make me want to watch this film. I do feel that it must have been a difficult film to make. How do you portray 127 hours of somebody stuck in a narrow crevice without making the film so short as to not really appreciate the character of Aron Ralston and what he had gone through, nor so long as to make a film where very little happens. I feel that Danny Boyle did an excellent job of directing, and his screenplay with Simon Beaufoy works really well. Invincible Aron Ralston soon realises that he is not invincible and captures what he thinks are his last few days on a video camera. There will be no plot spoiler here, but his escape from certain death is not an easy watch in any way at all. The fact that this is a true story of human endeavour and determination makes this film all the more encapsulating. Had someone made this film as a piece of fiction it would have likely been considered to be far fetched. It really does make you think how you would have coped had you been in the same position. A 90 minute runtime for this film works really well - a good balance between character progression and enough happening to keep your attention.
