What to Know

Critics Consensus

A manic, overstuffed blend of sci-fi, comedy, and romance, Innerspace nonetheless charms, thanks to Martin Short's fine performance and the insistent zaniness of the plot.

Sheila Benson Los Angeles Times Densely inventive and consistently hilarious. Aug 6, 2020 Full Review Gene Siskel Chicago Tribune ''Innerspace'' is a classic example of a film that would achieve more if it tried less. But it still is an ambitious comedy made funny by Short's sweet performance... Rated: 3/4 Aug 6, 2020 Full Review Ian Nathan Empire Magazine It doesn't have the dark edge of Joe Dante's other works, but brilliant performances by Martin Short and Meg Ryan make it a joy from start to finish. Rated: 4/5 Aug 6, 2020 Full Review People Staff People Magazine Watching Innerspace is like riding a familiar roller coaster: It's decent fun but the thrill is gone. Aug 6, 2020 Full Review Lawrence O'Toole Maclean's Magazine Noisy, witless and filled with unimpressive simulations of human tissue, Innerspace is a perfect example of small minds finding a suitable subject. Aug 6, 2020 Full Review Ángel Luis Inurria El Pais (Spain) It's entertaining and pleasing. [Full Review in Spanish] Jun 15, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews

Leaburn O Fun and we enjoyed watching this silly tale but objectively it is utterly daft and hasn't aged too great. Watched it on DVD. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/29/24 Full Review Jay H This should have been the biggest hit of Summer 1987. Enormously entertaining. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/25/23 Full Review Weston H Excellent film, which definitely paved the way for other films of this nature in the future! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/04/23 Full Review Ricky A fun wacky concept and some really great action sequences that truly stressed me out. also MARTIN SHORT. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/11/23 Full Review Max K If you google searched "Generic Carbon Stamped 80s Movie" this is the exact film you would get. This film is made up of pretty much nothing original, its characters and humor have all been done in about 30 different movies in the same era. The positive reviews here are quite misleading, and the bulk of them you will find present are here not for the writing, but for the nostalgia of the 80s. The movie is 2 hours long and you will feel every minute of it, its villain characters are moronically stupid and it suffers from some serious tonal whiplash and really drawn out plot. There's only about 3 minutes of this movie that I'd actually like to watch for some of the effects and sound design. But the film as a whole? Forget it. Everything in this movie has been done before somewhere better, and if you're looking to satisfy that 80s craving, I'd recommend watching one of the films this movie ripped off of instead. This is one that you can definitely skip and find something better. There is nothing here that this movie has to offer over any other scifi film in the 80s, or any scifi film period for that matter, it doesn't at all surprise me that this was a flop at the box office. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 05/06/23 Full Review Jack S This overlong and seriously over-plotted but generally fun nonsense begins well, but the plot's just too complicated by the mid-way point for it to be effectively workable thereafter. However, Short is exceptional throughout here, in a role tailor made for his wacky schtick—Perhaps his best work in a film. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/22/23 Full Review Read all reviews
