Critics Consensus

Pleasing to the eye but narratively befuddled, Jupiter Ascending delivers another visually thrilling misfire from the Wachowskis.

Brent McKnight Seattle Times No amount of visual pyrotechnics, no matter how spectacular, can save such a tired, weak story. Rated: C- Jul 6, 2020 Full Review Jason Bailey Flavorwire The storytelling is clumsy, the characters are befuddling, and the Wachowskis' action sequences - once so graceful and thrilling - are ugly, noisy, and worst of all, boring. D D Why not spend some effort on the story if you're going to make a movie like this? It's like they wanted to try out some special effects and quickly threw together a nonsensical script around those special effects. The story had a little to work with but it never happened. Too much action and too little story so the unbelievable was never made believable. The whole super surfer boot thing was way over done in the action parts too. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/06/24 Full Review Kim C I suspect that one day this very watchable 'Sunday afternoon with pizza and beer' film will achieve Cult status Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/19/24 Full Review Dunda G The Wachowskis wrote a few cool scripts in the 1990s and directed a cool movie in 1999. That's it. It seems like after "The Matrix" was released they were never able to come up with good ideas again! And let's be honest... They ripped off A LOT of classic and/or obscure sci fi movies and books in "The Matrix"! It's a great movie, but it feels like when a rock band release a cool album of covers songs... "Jupiter Ascending" brings us Mila Kunis as a harmless protagonist who doesn't need to move a finger to do anything, just happen to have some DNA and wait for Channing Tatum to save her EVERY 5 MINUTES! Tatum must be the least charismatic actor EVER and this movie really shows it. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/12/24 Full Review Draec M Colorfull and action paced nothingburger... A story so silly that I almost smiled once or twice. PROS: +0,5 for visuals and CGI. They are quite good. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/08/24 Full Review Sondra S This is an amazing movie! I feel the majority of the other reviews shown for this movie are plants, & a smokescreen to obfuscate, presented, like the idea that we're the only intelligently inhabited planet in the universe... with the design to hide the truth. People deriding the heroine being rescued are denying any science-fiction fan the epicness of this story and the universe presented therein. The costumes are stunning. The worlds created are original and exceedingly well represented. The characters are unique and fabulous! This is a movie worth seeing again and again, as I have. I also love the Matrix, another Wachowski's masterpiece. Over time, this movie has caught up with The Matrix to match how much I derive enjoyment from it!! Don't deny yourself this work of art! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/04/24 Full Review J V I have no words...time wasted. So many poor plotlines repeated over and over again. How many times should the princess be saved while falling from a building, I get that Superman did it, like, once, but really, how many times in one movie! Who anyway enjoys watching the hero princess cleaning toilets, just typing this is frustrating. Love the cast...thinking about it now, maybe this is some sort of humiliation ritual, who knows. Keep well, and aim higher please. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/12/24 Full Review Read all reviews
