Rated 5/5 Stars •  Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/04/24 Full Review Nathan W I haven't seen this movie in probably twenty years, but I was definitely one of the people who did not see the end coming. This is a special type of film, like "Shutter Island", that is actually just as entertaining the second time around, but for a completely different reason. Instead of being surprised by the twist, the enjoyment comes from noticing all the subtle clues that you missed, and feeling a little silly that you didn't see where things were headed. The overall story was pretty simple, and it's basically a character drama that exists in two halves. You know, Bruce Willis's character trying to figure out his sh*t, that he wasn't even aware of, and Haley Joel Osment's character coming to terms with his unusual "gift". I will say that I was thoroughly impressed with Osment's acting prowess. I mean, not only did little dude carry this movie, but he did it quite well. He's so deliberate and expressive, and easily holds his own in scenes with adults. (Not many child actors can do that). Toni Collette is someone who's work I slept on for a long time, but she's actually pretty great. Her performance was incredibly emotional and convincing, but she didn't have enough screentime to really flush out the character. I thought Bruce Willis was pretty good too, but he doesn't have a whole lot of range as an actor. He just feels like the same character in different things to me, so I have a hard time believing his roles. I can't say that the dialogue was all that gripping either, but the writing was solid, and the interactions between our main characters felt genuine. The cinematography wasn't overly complicated or stylish, which is a little surprising for a Shyamalan flick, but it still had a decent number of the extend takes that I like. And as difficult as they are to pull off normally, it was even more impressive here, since most of them at least involved the kid, and one he handled pretty much on his own. (I can't even think of another movie where a child actor was in one such scene, much less several). The score was ominous and menacing from the start, which really helped to set the tone of the film. The plot didn't really ramp up the creepy factor until the second half, but there was some genuinely unnerving stuff going on after that. But the true brilliance of this movie comes from the fact that all this is happening to a kid. It raises the stakes emotionally, which makes it easier to feel for the character, which in turn pulls you right into the story. Of course the twist is what this movie is most remembered for. It's one of the all time greats, it's set up in such a simple yet profound way, and it really hits you like a tons of bricks the first time you see it. It did feel a little rushed to get to that point, the way everything was resolved so quickly, but it was all so touching that it doesn't even matter. I really wish that Shyamalan would get back to his roots, and start knocking out bangers like this again. The story was simple, the plot was interesting, and everything made sense. I can't say that for a lot of the things he's made, but I guess that's what makes this one so special.
