Strange Way of Life Reviews

Jun 30, 2024

What to say about this short film... I like the score I guess, solid compositions. Ethan Hawke was over the top, especially his growling voice the whole time. I think Pedro Pascal was solid though, easily out-shining Hawke. Ultimately the story lacks profundity and verges on quaint, even given its relevant themes.

An interesting postmodern Western.

If you enjoyed Brokeback Mountain, you'll likely enjoy this. Not my kind of story.

Pedro Pascal just ruined the move, where did he learn not to act?

A short film with Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal in a film from the mind of Pedro Almodóvar. What is here is really good, but it ends abruptly which left me wanting more. There is a lot packed into this 30 minutes and every word is heightened. It is beautiful to see even if it feels incomplete. Final Score: 7/10

Great acting and western atmosphere.

It gets your attention, and pulls you in somewhat, but in the end, goes nowhere. Could not sit thru that again.

When most movies being made are overlong and 3 hours running time, here is a movie that deserves much more length. Why so short. Good but becomes a trifling.

So horrible ... I couldn't believe Pedro made this... gawd.

MASTERPIECE! Almodovar adds another fine jewel to his cinematic crown. Well acted, beautifully photographed, compelling score, all meticulously assembled: BRAVO!

Leaving the audience wanting more can be a major factor of a lasting piece of work. Pedro Almodovar's short film Strange Way of Life is a tale of fate, heartache, and moral ambiguity. It's in this grey area of complicated yearnings and grief that drives a sense of unquenchable solemnity and hurt. It's a tale woven together in a shared experience between two former lovers whose circumstances in the Wild West drive them apart, before rejoining 25 years later under vague conditions. Ethan Hawke's cold demeanor mixed with Pedro Pascal's quiet desperation coalesce into a powerhouse performance. Every ounce of pain, bereavement, and complicated emotion is gently irrigated from their acting prowess to weave a story that leaves you hoping for a resolution that you aren't sure you're going to get. You feel yourself in the room with them while Pascal begs Hawke for merciful reconsideration of the actions he is about to take that will change the course of all of their lives. This combined with stunning cinematography and set design create a Western vista that is perhaps a bit more colorful than we've seen in other works. My comment about being left wanting more from a story is one I've found a different meaning for in this work. A story as unique as this is one I desired to continue, feeling that the story, characters, and world almost beckon you to continue on with them. It ended too soon, and I feel that did not serve in favor of this film. There was more to be told. Pascal's parting monologue does end this story on a forlorn, if not somber note. Introspection and leaps of faith encouraged our characters to take a leap, to course correct the trajectory of the lives of those they loved - with dire results. While there was more to be said, I feel at peace with the resolution we were given.

It tells so much in just such little time, loved it.

Good actors but a little dumb

Feb 17, 2024

Oy vey...so grotesquely unnecessary and stupid.

Pedro is a powerhouse performer, so nothing he does can be said to be bad. I've never liked Ethan Hawke, so it was difficult to watch. I think the problem lies in the plotting. It's not believable and relies too much on coincidence to prop up the flagging story. It could have been improved if someone from outside the cultural milieu had been asked to review the story.

"You never loved me, you've never loved anyone in your life." A short story about some sad cowboys

the only flaw of the movie is that it's too short. loved it!

It's short and sweet. Its beautiful to look at and the costumes are glorious but I could have tasted a little bit more of this delicious concoction.

The movie told an engaging story and the lead actors were excellent. I wish it had been longer so we would know how things played out after the last scene.

I felt it lacks a lot of heart for an Almodóvar film. Maybe is the short running time, but I didn't get engaged in the story
