Zodiac

What to Know

Critics Consensus

A quiet, dialogue-driven thriller that delivers with scene after scene of gut-wrenching anxiety. David Fincher also spends more time illustrating nuances of his characters and recreating the mood of the '70s than he does on gory details of murder.

Adam Nayman The Ringer More than any American movie of the past decade, Zodiac accepts and embraces irresolvability, which may be why it's so hypnotically rewatchable. Oct 4, 2021 Full Review Namrata Joshi Outlook Downey Jr is perfect as the alcoholic wastrel of a crime reporter Paul Averi, as is Mark Raffalo as the dependable cop David. Rated: 3/4 Jan 25, 2019 Full Review Bob Mondello NPR.org There are no tidy, last-minute plot twists to make you feel good in Fincher's Zodiac, just focus -- to keep an audience focused -- and the most disciplined filmmaking you've seen in forever. Moira I Good thriller, fine cast Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/18/22 Full Review Dan C A great, well directed thriller highlighting one of America's most unsolved serial killers. A stella cast with a 70s feel that really makes you think your in that era. A real cat and mouse type thriller that you'll be sure to enjoy. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/14/24 Full Review Michael R Very good movie. So much so that I went and book and read the book it was based on. Gyllenhall does a fine job, as usual. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/04/24 Full Review Ronald H Probably David Fincher's best film. The Zodiac story takes place between the late 60's and early 70's, and everything is period perfect. The cast is superb. The film was released in 2007, and I'm sure that Fincher wanted us to feel frustration at the lack of available technology in the era of the crimes: no DNA, no Internet or computers, no cell phones. The various police departments fail to communicate with each other. The frustration builds to a nearly unbearable level. It's masterful. One of the best films of the year. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/25/24 Full Review Teddy B David Fincher turns what should have been a humdrum, uninteresting true crime drama into a gut-wrenching, genuinely enthralling character study that doubles as an effective thriller. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/20/24 Full Review K K I enjoyed this movie due to the acting, directing, writing, makeup, clothes, sets, and lights. Across the board, this move delivered the goods. I have some biases in liking this genre of psychological movie over the dark realities of life: killings. The goal, of course, is to stop these awful things, and through movies like this one, we learn a little more about the people involved in trying to stop these happenings. This movie told a story and told it quite well! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/04/24 Full Review Read all reviews
