Milli Vanilli, Christian Slater, and A Chorus Line are all coming to the third season of The Goldbergs, and they’re linked by one thing: hormones.

Keeping with the tradition of past seasons, creator Adam F. Goldberg is planning another school musical episode — but the cruel hand of puberty is casting a shadow over the proceedings this time. Adam (Sean Giambrone) and the rest of the school’s students are feeling the ch-ch-changes of growing pains and dropped voices, so drama teacher Miss Cinoman (Ana Gasteyer) takes desperate measures to put on this year’s production.

“Puberty has decimated the school’s talent pool, so with the help of Beverly and the recent Milli Vanilli scandal, they decide to Milli Vanilli their way through A Chorus Line,” Goldberg teases to EW, citing the famous lip-syncing duo of 1989. “Beverly’s goal this year is to make puberty as painless as possible, to be the one mother who makes sure her son doesn’t suffer through puberty and in doing so makes everything worse.”

The episode will also feature a heavy dose of Christian Slater, thanks to a hormonal obession from older sister Erica (Hayley Orrantia) and new series regular Lainey (AJ Michalka). “Now that we have two teenage girls as regular cast members struggling through high school wanting to find a boy who’s like the ideal person — Christian Slater — it’s opening up more stories and more of those pop culture references,” says Goldberg.

The season will also include previously announced episodes devoted to Risky Business and Short Circuit. Season 3 of The Goldbergs premieres Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 8:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
