Chelsea Handler goes 'rogue,' invites Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie onstage to accept Barbie's Best Comedy honor at Critics Choice Awards

The category, like many at the ceremony, was revealed off-screen.

This is Chelsea Handler's show and she'll do with it what she wants.

Barbie won Best Comedy at the Critics Choice Awards, but, like the lion's share of the night's trophies, it was announced off-screen while the show took its sweet time doling out the major awards.

After a commercial break, host Handler announced she was going "rogue" and invited Barbie director Greta Gerwig and star/producer Margot Robbie onstage to get their flowers.

"Earlier tonight, Barbie was awarded Best Comedy but it wasn't on stage, so I'm going to go rogue because I feel like Greta and Margot deserve the opportunity to make an acceptance speech," Handler said. "So ladies, would you mind coming up here and accepting the award for Best Comedy?"

The visibly flustered Gerwig and Robbie then made their way to the stage where Robbie, after expressing how "actually unexpected" this moment was — "This was not part of the show" — ceded the spotlight to Gerwig.

"Thank you so much for letting this happen! We were just very excited in our chairs," Gerwig began, "and it's very nice to be up here.... I laughed so hard every day, I ruined almost every take, and it's because of our beautiful cast — Margot and Ryan [Gosling] and America [Ferrera] and everybody who got to be so brilliant as they are."

Aside from Best Comedy, Barbie also took home five other Critics Choice Awards, including Best Original Screenplay and Best Original Song for "I'm Just Ken." Star America Ferrera delivered an emotional and impassioned speech as she accepted the CCA's SeeHer Award.
