Summer Ann Newman (formerly Travers and Abbott) is a resident of Genoa City, currently portrayed by Allison Lanier and most notably portrayed by Hunter King from 2012 to 2022. The character was previously played by child actress Samantha Bailey from 2009-2012 and then by Lindsay Bushman in 2012 after being rapidly aged to a teenager.

On September 21, 2018, it was announced that Hunter King had to take a little time off from Y&R to film on her other show Life In Pieces, in the meantime actress Bayley Corman temporarily replaced King, only appearing for 3 episodes, starting October 1. On July 13, 2021, it was confirmed that King would exit the role as well as her co-star Michael Mealor.

Days later, it was reported that King and Mealor would briefly return to the show; they made their appearances for October 12 to 15, 2021.  King made subsequent appearances on December 24, 2021 and February 21, 2022.

On April 20, 2022, it was announced that newcomer Allison Lanier would replace King in the role of Summer. She debuted on May 17, 2022.

Biography[]

Summer is the daughter of Phyllis Newman and Nick Newman. Her alleged father was Jack Abbott due to Sharon Newman tampering with the paternity test result.

Birth[]

Summer was conceived during an affair between her parents when Nick was married to Sharon Newman and Phyllis was sleeping with her ex-husband Jack Abbott. Phyllis was found to be pregnant, and in 2006, Sharon divorced Nick. There was a question as to who Summer's father was: Jack or Nick? Once Nick saw the results he left for a few days. When he returned, he announced that he was the father and he and Phyllis married.

Summer was born December 18, 2006 when her mother and Jack got stuck in an elevator at Newman Enterprises, and Jack was forced to deliver her. Her name comes from her mother's maiden name and the ironic fact that she was born in the winter.

First Year[]

Two months after she was born she, Phyllis, and Lauren Baldwin's infant son, Fenmore Baldwin, were all kidnapped by Lauren's longtime enemy, Sheila Carter. Sheila stole Phyllis's face and then disguised herself as an elderly woman to keep them all hostage in a retirement home. They were all rescued when Lauren arrived and shot Sheila.

Months later, Nick was presumed dead. Once revealed to be alive, he couldn't remember Summer or being married to Phyllis. He was appalled at the fact that he ever left his ex, Sharon, for Phyllis. But he soon got his memory back and he and Phyllis reunited.

Brain Damage[]

After witnessing Jack and Phyllis making love, Patty befriends Phyllis in order to gain her trust. On June 26, 2009 Patty overhears Phyllis reminding Summer that she is allergic to peanuts after she finds peanut butter cookies given to Summer at a birthday party. Phyllis throws them into the garbage and later Patty retrieves the cookies and eats them, making sure that there were still traces of the nuts on her lips, and then kissed Summer on the mouth. Because of her allergy, the exposure to the nuts actually caused Summer to go into anaphylactic shock.

Heather Stevens believing that Phyllis intentionally caused Summer harm because of hers and Nick's failing relationship, filed a court order keeping Phyllis and Nick away from Summer while she was in her coma. Later they find out that Patty was the one responsible for Summer's illness after finding a picture of Summer in her things at the GCAC.

After Summer comes out of her coma, Nick and Phyllis realize that she has trouble speaking. Doctors perform an MRI on Summer and it's determined that she's suffering from damage to her brain that affects her speech. After many months of therapy and going to Switzerland and Boston for special treatments, Summer made a full recovery.

Paternity[]

For years, Summer had been raised believing that Nick Newman was her father. When she developed a crush on Jack's son Kyle Jenkins, Nick panicked and became overprotective, which resulted in tension between the two. Nick, armed with a hairbrush of Summer's that had strands of her hair on it, decided to take a paternity test after finding out that the first one taken years ago was inconclusive. A week later, on the day of Summer's high school graduation, Nick received a letter from the lab revealing results that were devastating to him. Nick was not Summer's father. But in fact, Nick is Summer's father revealed in July 2013, due to Sharon tampering with the paternity test results making sure the result was negative and that Jack Abbott is the alleged father. The only person who knows about Sharon's involvement is Phyllis Newman who overheard her speaking to Cassie Newman's grave. The two women then get into a fight resulting in Phyllis falling down a flight of stairs causing Phyllis to become unconscious. Phyllis slips into a coma, and Daniel returns to Genoa City to take Phyllis to a care facility by where he lives.

Life without a mother[]

Jack and Summer bonded over their love for Phyllis, but she came to forgive Nick and think of him as her father. Summer became friends with Sharon after she stood up for her against one of the cameramen. Summer visited Fen in prison when he was arrested for drugs. When Fen got released, he told Summer he planned to run away because he feared going back to prison for Carmine Basco's murder. Michael and Lauren convinced Summer to trick Fen into coming back and he was placed under house arrest. Summer tried to explain her actions to Fen, but he coldly rebuffed her. Just before a shot, Esmerelda, a fellow model, gave Summer some pills and she calls Fen while she was high. Summer ended up collapsing on the stairs, while a concerned Fen went looking for her and he was arrested and sent back to prison for breaking his house arrest. Summer blamed herself, but Fen reassured her it wasn't her fault.

On the run[]

Summer goes on the run with Austin Travers after he shoots police chief Paul Williams during an altercation with Avery Clark and Dylan McAvoy. Austin took Avery hostage because he blamed her for his mother's death. When Dylan came to save Avery, they struggled over the gun and it went off, injuring Paul. Summer and Austin who were previously dating, grew closer while they were on the run together. At a motel on the Canadian border, Summer lost her virginity and shared her first time with Austin. Shortly after returning to Genoa City Summer and Austin decide to get married.

Summer and austin wedding

Coping without her mom and her return[]

A girl who looked just like Cassie named Mariah Copeland is hired by Nick at The Underground. Nick and Sharon invited her to live with them. Mariah was rude towards Summer but Faith liked her. After Mariah tries to seduce Nick in lingerie which Sharon walked in on, she had a big fight with Mariah and Mariah left town with none other than Ian Ward. Mariah was part of The Path and thought of Ian as a father. Ian drugged her and married her but Nick and Sharon came to her rescue.

Summer and Austin invited Jack and Kelly over for their first married adult dinner. Kelly was a bit hesitant about going but Jack insisted and he looked forward to telling Summer and Austin that Kelly's moving in at dinner. When Jack told Summer, she was very emotional and stormed upstairs. Austin ran up to Summer and she apologized to Jack and Kelly for being so childish and immature. Summer felt everybody was moving on with their lives forgetting about Phyllis but had to accept Kelly into Jack's life.

Austin also couldn't accept Summer's extravagant gifts such as an expensive tie from Fenmore's.

Summer, Abby, and Lily held a bachelorette party for Sharon which also included Nikki, Victoria, Kelly, and Mariah. Sharon quickly decided to go to Crimson Lights instead. Mariah had Summer give her money to bribe the bartender into stripping. All the girls have been drinking and partying except Summer who was drinking non-alcoholic drinks. The guys ended up showing up at Crimson Lights as well and also heavily loaded. Abby had too many drinks and bashed Sharon for marrying Nick again because Sharon married Adam Nick, Abby's father Victor, Nick again...etc. Mariah stood up for Sharon against Abby, and Abby stated that Mariah spits venom about Sharon every day. Once Michael Baldwin got slammed to the floor, a drunken fight broke out. Mariah fought with Abby. Everybody there ended up in jail. Eventually, they were set free.

The next day Fenmore had arrived back into town and came to see Summer. Seeing Summer and Fenmore sit down at The Underground and reconnect about their memories, made Austin jealous and made Mariah suspicious.

At Nick and Sharon's wedding, Summer supported Nick and Sharon's relationship by speaking for them. Just before they were about to get married, Phyllis busted through the doors and shocked everybody! As Phyllis walked down the aisle, Summer was in tears and hugged her mother. Phyllis fainted and everybody rushed to her rescue. Sharon left the church.

Kelly arrived at Genoa City Memorial Hospital with Jack and Summer. When Phyllis awoke, Summer got to talk with her. Phyllis then talked to Avery and then Jack. She questioned Jack why she wouldn't let her come home but Jack claimed she needed to rest. Nick asked Phyllis if she knows something Sharon's told her. Sharon showed up to ask Phyllis about the secret Phyllis might know about her that could potentially hurt Nick. The next day, Summer took off her wedding ring and introduced Austin to Phyllis as her friend. Austin was angry at Summer and Summer claimed they can't give Phyllis a whole lot of new information right now. Kelly felt out of place. Kelly felt guilty and when Jack returned home, she had her bags packed ready to leave. Jack was persistently trying to convince her to stay with her and eventually she stayed the night. Jack woke up the next morning next to a note from Kelly that she had left.

Phyllis woke up and remembered that Jack proposed to her before her fall and wanted to retrieve the ring she pawned for money to return to Genoa City. Jack told her she needed rest and Phyllis questioned why wouldn't he let her return home. Jack didn't want to break the news to Phyllis about his romance with Kelly just yet. Jack passionately kissed Kelly and promised to break the news to Phyllis.

Summer took off her wedding ring and introduced Austin to Phyllis as her friend. Austin was angry at Summer and Summer claimed they can't give Phyllis a whole lot of new information right now. Phyllis finally returned home to the Abbott Mansion where she was greeted by Summer and Austin whom she had met in the hospital. Phyllis asked Summer why she's so close to her tall, handsome, male friend. Summer told Phyllis that her and Austin were engaged, which enraged Phyllis. Phyllis claimed Summer is only 18 and should be living her life. Summer corrected her, she is in fact 19. Phyllis asked how long they've been together and Austin stated last spring which Phyllis didn't agree with! Austin was still upset that Summer wouldn't tell Phyllis the truth.

Ashley dropped the bomb asking Phyllis how she likes her new son-in-law, Phyllis wasn't told Summer was married because the doctor told her family not to let her know all the information in the past year. Ashley claimed she was sorry for dropping the bomb on her like that. In the meantime, Jack hid all the technology in the house so Phyllis couldn't read up on what she missed. Phyllis cracked the password by figuring it was Summer's birth date. While, Jack, Austin, and Summer were over at the mansion again, Phyllis angrily blurted out that Summer married a felon! Phyllis was derogative towards Austin and furious. Phyllis was spiteful towards him for holding her sister at gunpoint and shooting Paul Williams at the wedding! Summer fired back by saying Austin's not the only one in this room who almost killed Paul Williams. Phyllis insisted on having the marriage annulled but Summer and Austin convinced her otherwise. Austin apologized to Phyllis for his past and Phyllis tried to negotiate forgiveness if he informed her on what she missed in the last year. Austin couldn't do that since he'd be going against Jack, Summer's fake father if he did that.

Hatred for Sharon and Mariah[]

Summer inadvertently helps Victor discover Sharon's secret when she asks him what he is doing with her hairbrush (Victor thought it was Faith's). After Nick, Noah, and Mariah left for the church; Phyllis showed up and took Sharon to the spot where she fell. Sharon finally remembered everything. When Victor, Jack, and Nick showed up; Sharon tearfully admitted she had switched the results of Summer's paternity test and that Nick was Summer's biological father. Nick was furious with Sharon and vowed to never forgive her. Things got worse for Sharon when Nick told her he was suing her for full custody of Faith, so Sharon hired David Sherman to represent her. Summer and Nick were upset by Sharon but also by Phyllis who only cared about revenge but eventually forgave Phyllis.

Summer and Mariah argued about Nick's willingness to take Faith away from Sharon. Summer also talked to Kyle, which gave Mariah an idea to mess with Austin and Summer's marriage, but Kevin talked her out of it. After Austin and Summer had sex in an empty Underground, Summer went to the back room. Mariah showed up and kissed Austin. Kevin saw the kiss but covered for Mariah when Summer came back. After Kevin and Mariah left, Austin told Summer Mariah kissed him, enraging her.

Summer and Fen got into an argument about her marriage to Austin. Fen told Summer he believed Austin deserved to be in prison and she deserved better. Summer was upset by what Fen said and went to the Underground to see Austin. Mariah tries to apologize for kissing Austin, but Summer rants at how Mariah is pathetic and selfish and how no one could ever love her. Mariah leaves upset and Austin tells Summer off for her hurtful words.

At the custody battle, the judge asked Faith to come to the stand and asks her about the situation. Faith wanted her parents to be together. Noah defended Sharon stating she's a good mother who has bipolar disorder and was just off her meds, which was her fault. Summer defended Nick stating all of the damage Sharon has done to her family's life. When Mariah was called to the stand, Sharon expected Mariah to fight for her, but was sworn in and told the full story about Sage having no pants on only because of the water spill. The judge granted Nick full custody of Faith, and Summer was thrilled that Nick won full custody, and even complimented Mariah for her honesty. Mariah was angry with Summer for only being nice to her for hurting her mother, especially since it resulted in them fighting and Mariah moving out. Summer kept trying to bash Sharon to Mariah, who angrily deflected the blame onto Nick.

Party and cover-up[]

Mariah questioned Summer and Austin about receiving a card for a party at the Abbott cabin. Austin says he and Summer got the same invite, and Summer seems surprised. Mariah quickly recognizes the tension between Summer and Austin, and gleefully wants to talk about it some more; Kevin suggests that they don't, and leads Mariah away. Austin tells Summer he needs to make some changes, and Summer worries he wants to break up with her. Austin reassures Summer that he still wants to be with her. They also decide to join Mariah and Kevin at the Abbott cabin, unaware they are being watched by someone. Summer and Austin received an invite as well. As the four of them wondered who sent the invite, someone watched them from behind a curtain at the Underground.

At the cabin, Mariah, Kevin, Austin, and Summer were joined by Abby, Fen, and Noah. Noah called Abby out on being the one who called them to the cabin, and she admitted it. Abby suggested they play 'Never Have I Ever'. Summer said" Never have I ever had a crush on a best friend", which Kevin and Mariah looked at each other and drank. The game started as casual fun until Fen said "Never have I ever committed murder, which causes Austin to storm out in anger.

Austin comes back and apologizes for storming off like he did, saying that talking about murder made him think of his mom. Abby wants to continue the game, but Summer and Austin decide to leave. Courtney shows up and says that everyone that has to stay there because there is a bad storm out there. Someone spikes the punch, and everyone loses consciousness after drinking it. When they regain consciousness, they can't find Austin. Kevin goes out to look for him but comes back when he can't find him. Kevin opens the closet doors and Austin tumbles out.

Courtney tries to revive Austin but pronounces him dead. Courtney finds blood by Austin's head and tells everyone not to touch the body. Everyone gets scared and starts accusing each other. Noah finds a vial in the garbage, and Fen admits he spiked the punch with a drug that was supposed to loosen everyone up, but he admitted he didn't know what it was and wouldn't say where he was. Abby starts yelling at Fen, and Kevin defends him by bringing out up the "Naked Heiress" stunt from Abby's past. Abby defends that it was a publicity stunt and that no one ended up dead. Mariah says that Abby cannot talk about Austin that way. Summer yells at Mariah to not talk about Austin at all, and Mariah screams at Summer that she was looking out for her feelings.

Suddenly, Mariah remembers this is like a part from one of Plato Sphere's books. Kevin gets defensive when people start attacking Plato Sphere, and he admits he is Plato Sphere. Mariah and Fen defend Kevin, but everyone else accuses him of murder. Summer remembers hiding a bloodied bookend under one of the couch cushions of the She finds it and screams in horror. Summer tearfully starts crying that she killed Austin, but Noah and Fen refuse to believe it. Courtney bags the bookend for evidence. Summer starts hyperventilating and Abby, Noah, and Fen try to calm her down. Courtney says Summer couldn't have gotten Austin into the closet, so Kevin implies that someone may have helped her. Fen snaps at his uncle, and Mariah tells Fen not to get mad at Kevin when this is his fault for drugging them.

Abby takes Summer out of the room to calm her down. Everyone (including Mariah and Courtney) decides to make it look like Austin's death was an accident. Summer is against the cover-up but reluctantly goes along with it. Fen goes to set up the cover-up. He comes back and announced that Austin's body is gone. Summer is hopeful that Austin may still be alive. Noah goes to look for Austin, and the police arrive and ask what happened. Kevin covers and says he fell off the ladder, but he is fine. They say Austin went to look for help and never came back. The group is taken back to Genoa City where they give statements. Noah leaves after hearing about a collapse at the Underground. Mariah and Fen sit with Summer in the interrogation room. Summer is panicking and Mariah tells Fen to get Summer under control because she isn't going down for something she didn't do. Summer continues to freak out, and Mariah loses her patience with Summer. She tells Summer that this isn't just about her anymore and that they are all in trouble if the truth comes out. Summer shoots back that this was Mariah's idea, and that she didn't ask her to do this. Mariah scoffs that she did this for Austin, and not for Summer. Paul comes in and announces that Austin has been located and that he is fine.

Kyle Returns[]

Paul takes Mariah, Kevin, and Summer out by where the Abbott Cabin is. They see someone, wrapped in a blanket coming towards them. Summer runs to the figure only to discover that it is Kyle. Paul asks Kyle what he is doing out there, and Kyle says that his car stalled. Mariah and Kevin immediately wonder if Kyle had been the one who moved Austin's body, and even wonder if he had been the one who murdered Austin. Summer is appalled at the idea, but Mariah and Kevin want to investigate Kyle's car. They find a piece of fabric sticking out from the trunk. Mariah and Kevin want to open the trunk, but Summer is against the idea. Noah arrives and agrees with Mariah and Kevin on opening the trunk. Mariah procures Kyle's keys and unlocks the trunk.

In Kyle's trunk, they find a flashlight and first aid kit. Mariah admits she expected to find Austin's body instead, and Summer goes off on Mariah for thinking the worst of Kyle. Mariah tries to explain what she meant, but Summer carries on, and Mariah angrily tells Summer that they are on the same side. Kevin finds a bloody cloth in the trunk, and Noah suggests they have Courtney look at it. Mariah doesn't trust Courtney and is worried she would sell them out. They head to the hospital to confront Kyle about what they found. Abby wonders why Kyle would cover this up, and Mariah says there is no telling what someone would do to protect the person they love. Kyle comes into the room, and Abby sits with Summer while Noah, Kevin, and Mariah question Kyle. Noah says he remembers seeing Kyle outside of the Abbott cabin, and Kyle denies that he was there. Kevin asks about the bloody cloth, and Kyle says he had a boxing match before he came home. Kyle asks why does he feel like he is being accused of something, and then asks what really happened to Austin.

Abby thinks they should tell Kyle, but Mariah says that too many people already know. An officer comes by to talk to Summer, and while that is happening out of the room, the group tells Kyle how they think Summer killed Austin, and they staged it to look like an accident. Summer comes back and says that Austin's body was found in a wrecked car. Abby wonders if Austin could have survived and died by crashing an abandoned car but Mariah brings up that Austin had no pulse. Summer is asked to identify the body, and the group stays in the waiting room. After Summer identifies Austin's body, she heads to the chapel to mourn him. After a while, Kyle goes to check on her. Summer tells him she is glad he came to check on her. Kyle tells Summer he wishes he got back sooner, and Summer says this isn't his fault.

Kyle stays with Summer at her place all night, and is there to comfort her when she first wakes up. After Phyllis hear about Austin's death, she comes over to comfort Summer. Kyle suggests doing a memorial to say good-bye to Austin. Summer says she doesn't think she could go through with it, and Phyllis tells Summer she will take care of everything. After Summer goes back to sleep on the couch, Phyllis questions Kyle on the timing of his arrival. Summer watches a video of her and Austin on her laptop. After Summer had left the room in the video, Austin turned to the cam area and said he owed Summer an apology. Austin had said how he was depressed and needed to tell Summer something, but Summer had come back before he could make his confession. Summer left the room and when she came back, she saw Abby on the video at Crimson Lights. Summer wondered why Austin would have a video of Abby, and Noah said it was for a documentary he was doing about Victor and Jack. Summer said she didn't remember hearing about that, and then cried that she was a horrible wife for not remembering everything Austin had told her; Noah comforted her.

Austin and Abby's betrayal, anonymous messages[]

At Austin's memorial, Summer remembers waking up and seeing Austin arguing with someone. She soon remembers it is Abby, and after giving her eulogy, remembers hearing Abby telling Austin that their affair is over. Stunned, Summer furiously accuses Abby of sleeping with Austin. Summer rages at Abby, who runs out of the church in tears. Mariah calls Kyle out on knowing about the affair. Summer asks Kyle if he knew, and he reluctantly admits he did. Summer rages at Kyle, and wants to know who else knew about the affair. Summer asks Mariah if she knew because of her and Abby's private talk at the cabin. Mariah confirms she knew and Summer surmises Kevin knew as well. She continues to have a meltdown, and Jack and Phyllis order everyone out of the church. Kyle tries to explain himself, but Jack tells him not here.

Once Summer is alone, she rages at Austin's casket. Nick and Phyllis hear Summer, and advise her that she should go. Summer cries that this is all her fault. Nick and Phyllis assure her it isn't, and Summer runs out of the church. She and Noah go to the Abbott Cabin where Kyle, Mariah, Kevin, and Courtney are. Courtney tells Summer that she didn't kill Austin, and Kevin and Noah say the blood on the towel was Austin's. Kyle explains that he punched Austin, but Mariah and Noah are still skeptical because he lied about the blood being Austin's and also lied about being in town. Kyle's explains that he wanted solid proof before he told Summer about the affair. Abby comes out of the backroom, and Summer charges at Abby. Noah holds her back, and Abby runs out of the cabin. After everyone else leaves, Kyle tries to comfort Summer by assuring her that she deserves better than Austin, and Summer tells him she doesn't want to talk about Austin. Kyle asks Summer to let him help her through this and assures her he isn't going anywhere.

Summer opens the armoire and sees Austin in the reflection, but when she turns around, he isn't there. Summer suddenly flashes back to her confronting Austin about his affair. Austin had grabbed her, and Summer screamed for him to let go of her. Kyle snapped we out of it since she was actually screaming. Summer told him what she remembered and Kyle pushed her to remember more. Summer eventually remembered confronting Austin with the bookend, but then dropping it while he was still alive. Summer is relieved to realize she did not kill Austin. Abby showed up at the cabin and tried to apologize to Summer. Abby swore she would do whatever she had to do to make it up to Summer, but Summer slaps Abby and vows to never forgive her for sleeping with Austin.

Kyle and Summer are having coffee at Crimson Lights, and Kyle advises Summer not to let her anger towards Abby consume her. Summer gets out her compact mirror and finds a message written on it that says, "I saw what you did" Summer sends everyone involved a text and asks her to meet them at the Abbott Cabin. Once everyone involved is at the cabin, Summer shows them the message on her mirror and accuses Abby of doing it. Abby swears she didn't do it, but Mariah and Summer continue to accuse Abby of lying, and she leaves in frustration. Kyle goes after Abby, and the group continues to wonder who is watching them, and leaving the messages. Noah thinks it is convenient that Fen left town shortly after Austin's death. Kevin says he has school, and is trying to get his life back in order. Mariah asks if drugging them part of his rehab program. Summer says she knows, and Fen he wouldn't do it. Mariah says she also thought she knew Austin and is a bad judge of character when it comes to men. Summer and Mariah start fighting about Austin and accusing each other of writing the messages. It escalates, and Kevin and Noah have to pull them apart. Courtney says they should go to the police, but Mariah, Kevin, and Noah are against the idea. Mariah says she isn't going to jail to protect Summer, and Summer says that she never asked for her help. Mariah snaps that she would turn her in if she could, and Kevin tells them to shut up. Kevin shares his theory that someone has been planning this set up for a long time, and Summer wonders who would want to kill Austin. Suddenly, the group hears a noise and rushes out to hear the sound of someone running away. Summer feels they should go to the police and Mariah says she is the reason they didn't go to the police. Summer says she doesn't think she killed Austin and tells them what she remembered. Despite Kevin and Mariah's objections; Summer, Noah, and Courtney leave to tell the police, but they find Abby unconscious in Chancellor Park, and message written on her cellphone: "Shut up or you're next". Courtney calls the paramedics and police. Abby is taken to the hospital, and everyone waits with her. Kyle shows up, and Noah asks where he was. Summer defends Kyle, reminding Noah that they are in this together.

Kevin decrypts a file on Austin's computer, where he spoke with such hatred about the Newman and Abbott families and promised to reveal all about them. The group figures that someone from the Newman or Abbott families could have had Austin killed. Kyle says Jack isn't a murderer, and Summer says Victor wouldn't do something so horrible, and they don't know him. Mariah points out that Victor hired her to gaslight a mentally ill woman (Sharon), so she knows him pretty well. Mariah continues to taunt Summer about how she didn't really know Austin, and Summer says Mariah will never know the kind of love she and Austin had. They soon find out from Stitch that Abby had told him all the details of Austin's death. Kevin questions Stitch, and he is offended by the idea that they think he had something to do with Austin's death. Stitch says he didn't really know Austin other than when Austin asked to interview him, and Stitch said no. Kevin later finds out that was a lie, and finds a file of Austin trying to interview Stitch.

Accusing Sharon & Another death[]

While Summer, Noah, and Kevin were having coffee at Crimson Lights, Sharon stopped in to say hi. She happily reported to Noah that she and Nick were getting along. Summer snarled that Nick was only being nice to Sharon because of Faith. Sharon tells Summer she hopes someday Summer can forgive her and says she misses having Summer in her life. After Sharon leaves, Summer starts suggesting to Noah that Sharon killed Austin. She becomes even more suspicious of Sharon when Sharon is caught trying to take Austin's computer and admits she wanted to erase an interview she did with Austin where she trash-talked Nick and the Newmans.

Summer continues to believe Sharon is guilty, but Mariah and Kevin are adamant that Sharon didn't do it. Noah and Courtney get engaged and plan to get married soon after. Summer helps Courtney get ready for her wedding, but then Courtney remembers she forgot her marriage certificate at the GGPD. The wedding guests all wait for Courtney to show up, but instead, they get a text from Courtney to come to the Abbott cabin. Once they get there, they find that Courtney is dead, and decide to finally phone the police.

Summer and Kyle consummate their relationship, and then Summer overhears Sharon tell Noah that the tire iron at her house is covered in Austin's blood. That's enough to convince Summer that Sharon is the killer, and she goes to call the police. Sharon flees, but is caught by Kyle. The police are called and Paul arrests Sharon. Summer rejoices that it is over now that Sharon has been caught, but then Mariah and Kevin reveal that Sharon's fingerprints on the tire iron had traces of latex on them, meaning they were copied and planted on the tire iron.

New suspects[]

Fen returns to town and summons the group to the Abbott cabin. He reveals that he had been in contact with the killer and had been blackmailed into drugging everyone. Paul shows up, and Gen gives him the package the drugs came in. The DNA analysis comes back with a match to Marco Annicelli, a dangerous drug lord on the FBI's most-wanted list. Summer and Kyle later spot Tobias Gray, a former employee of Jabot, watching them. Tobias crashes a celebration for the Newman and Abbott family's new alliance and makes a scene. He is escorted by Stitch and later involved in a car accident. Summer, Kyle, and Abby slip into Tobias' room and question him. Tobias dies before he can say anything. The group is convinced Tobias was the killer, and the case was closed but Kevin had his doubts.

A new girl, named Marisa Sierras, entered Noah's life. She previously had ties to the elusive Marco, who remained a suspect on Kevin's list. Kevin's eavesdropped on a conversation between Marisa and Victor and started to wonder if Victor was connected to the murders. Summer refused to believe Victor could be capable of something so horrible. Summer had a nightmare about Austin that left her shaken. Mariah hassled Summer, so she left to get some air. She encountered detective Mark Harding, who promised her they would find the killer. As Summer went to leave, Harding's phone rang, and Summer remembered hearing the ringtone at the cabin. Summer played the ringtone for the group, and then said Harding had the same ringtone.

Noah rushed off to confront Harding, and Sharon saw everyone heading out. She demands to know what was going on, but Mariah didn't want to cause Sharon stress. Summer decided Sharon had a right to know that Harding could have framed her for the murders, and told Sharon the truth. Sharon, Mariah, and Summer went to the GCPD where, along with Kevin, they observed a showdown between Paul, Dylan, and Harding. Harding was threatening Dylan with a gun, and Dylan took advantage of a momentary distraction to try and disarm Harding. A gunshot was heard, and Sharon panicked, thinking Dylan had been shot; but it was Harding, who had been shot. Summer and Mariah rushed to the scene, but Harding died before they got there.

Travis refused, but he showed up unexpectedly and exposed Luca as the oil well saboteur. Summer got mad and left. Back at their apartment Summer asked Luca to be honest, did have anything to do with oil disasters? Luca admitted that he did it as part of a plan to prove himself at Newman, and suggested that they fly away together. Summer told Luca to turn himself in or she would. Luca was restraining Summer from calling the police as Jack entered. Jack was able to get Luca to let Summer go by pleading to remember his love for her, and called the police. Before Luca was sent back to Spain, he said goodbye to Summer, admitting it started out a con but that he did fall in love with her. Summer told Luca she could never hate him.
