Crown Princess Victoria and her lookalike daughter Estelle, 12 don traditional dresses for Swedish National Day - with other family members in attendance for festivities

The Swedish royal family donned traditional dress to celebrate the country's National Day in the capital of Stockholm on Thursday.

A beaming Crown Princess Victoria, 46, who is the heir to the throne, waved to the crowds as she rode in a horse-drawn carriage with her husband Prince Daniel, 50, and their children, Princess Estelle, 12, and Prince Oscar, eight.

Celebrated annually on June 6, Swedish National Day marks the accession to the throne of Gustav Vasa in 1523, which made Sweden an independent country free from the Danish-ruled Kalmar Union.

While June 6 has been a public holiday for since 2005, it has been celebrated by Swedes for much longer than that.

And it wasn't just Crown Princess Victoria's young family that was out in force.

Also in attendance was Princess Victoria's younger brother, Prince Carl Philip, Duke of Värmland, 45, and his wife Princess Sofia, Duchess of Värmland, 39.

Their parents, King Carl XVI Gustaf, 78, and Queen Silvia, 80, were also present but did not ride in the carriage.

While the male royals were dressed in smart suits and blue ties, Crown Princess Victoria, Princess Estelle and Princess Sofia all glowed in the traditional 'Sverigedräkten' folk dress, which has long been worn by the women of the royal family at public events.

Developed in the early 20th century, the bright outfit, which reflects the Swedish flag, includes a white blouse with a blue tabard embroidered with flowers, a yellow overskirt and a white headscarf.

A series of sweet images show the Swedish royals smiling together, clearly enjoying the festivities.

One wholesome picture shows Princess Estelle holding her mother's hand while her younger brother clutches their father's hand.

Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia, who married in 2015, appeared to be enjoying the celebrations together as they linked arms.

Every year the King and Queen take part in a ceremony at Skansen, Stockholm’s open-air museum.

During the event, the blue and yellow Swedish flag is run up the mast while children in traditional peasant costume present the royal couple with bouquets of summer flowers.

National Day now also takes in new Swedish citizens, welcoming them with special ceremonies held around the country.

Last Thursday, Crown Princess Victoria was photographed sharing a loving moment with daughter Estelle as the young royal joined her parents for an official engagement.

The family stepped out to visit a new installation at The Princess Estelle Sculpture Park in Djurgården, named after the 12-year-old the future Queen of Sweden, to see the unveiling of a new installation entitled 'The Inner Flow of Life' by the Italian artist Giuseppe Penone.

Estelle looked every inch her graceful mother as the two matched in summery white dresses.

The pair were pictured sat side by side looking ethereal in elegant button-down dresses with loose ponytails.

Victoria's dress was pulled in at the waist with a chic white belt and was finished with a patterned hem.

Meanwhile, her daughter Estelle wore a slightly shorter number patterned with flower and leaf stems.

The Princess Estelle Sculpture Park in Royal Djurgården in Stockholm, was built by the royal couple in 2019 as part of a country initiative to promote cultural activity and make contemporary art more readily available.

Extended annually, it already includes the works 'Hoop-La' by Alice Aycock, 'Life Rings' by Elmgreen & Dragset, and 'Wind Sculpture in Bronze I' by Yinka Shonibare.
