Princess Eugenie shares adorable childhood photo of herself covered in sunscreen and armed with a bucket and spade as she reveals she used to be 'scared' of the ocean but is now on a mission to save it

An eco-conscious Princess Eugenie has revealed how she was once terrified of the ocean, despite now championing efforts to reverse environmental damage to it.

The Princess, 34, took to Instagram to share an adorable childhood photograph of herself at the seaside ahead of World Ocean Day on Saturday.

The young royal grinned towards the camera in the image donning a blue swimsuit and matching bucket hat with a generous layer of sun cream on her face.

Since becoming a mother to her children August, three, and Ernest, one, the daughter of the Duke and Duchess of York has taken up environmentalism in the hope of helping future generations.

Taking to Instagram, she explained: 'I love the ocean now but I was actually scared of it as a child.

She has a track record of being environmentally aware and has been an ambassador for the Blue Marine Foundation since June 2021.

The royal is an avid campaigner of environmental issues and even had a plastic-free wedding to her husband Jack Brooksbank in 2018.

In a second image showing stunning scenery of a whale in its natural habitat, Eugenie also encouraged her Instagram followers to discover the Blue Marine Foundation - a charity organization working to protect the ocean.

Eugenie has continued to show her dedication to the environment on multiple occasions, including her 2023 trip with the Solent Seascape Project, which is the first such attempt to actively restore the ocean in the UK.

At the time, Eugenie described how being a mother made her want 'to do more' for her children and future grandchildren, adding she hopes her son August, three, will one day take up environmentalism too.

During  the trip she wasn't afraid to get stuck in and helped scientists clean hundreds of oysters before they returned them to the sea.

Princess Eugenie also avoids using any single-use plastics at home and has already started educating August about climate change.

She previously said: 'My son's going to be an activist from two years old, which is in a couple of days. Everything is for them, right? Every decision we now make has to be about how August is going to be able to live his life.'

It comes after Eugenie paid tribute to her husband Jack Brooksbank in sweet birthday post last month.

The mother-of-two, 34, shared a series of snaps on Instagram to celebrate her 'love' on his 38th birthday with the previously unseen family photos showing the couple on the beach with their three-year-old son, August.

She captioned the photos: 'Happy Happy Birthday my love. Always making joy wherever you are', accompanied by three heart emojis.

One photo shows Eugenie with Jack enjoying a beach sunset as the pair throw their arms up in the air for a snap.

Another snap showed the couple beaming into each others eyes at a Force for Freedom gala, which is a charity, founded by Eugenie and her friend Julia de Boinville, which is working to end modern slavery and trafficking.

In another photo Jack can be seen fooling around with seaweed on his head while playing with their son August on the beach.

Royal fans rushed to the comments to wish Jack Happy Birthday but also to praise the couple's adorable bond.

Another said: 'Happy Birthday Jack. I hope you all have a Great day, best wishes from Germany.' Meanwhile another said: 'Happy birthday to Jack you both look lovely.'

The sweet photos come after Eugenie marked her 34th birthday with a tribute post dedicated to 'the best gift of all' - her children.

The daughter of the Duke and Duchess of York took to Instagram last month to praise her two sons, August, three, and Ernest who is about to mark his first birthday.

In the candid photograph, Eugenie playfully held her younger son, Ernest, aloft in her arms.

The 34-year-old's decision to cherish family on her special day comes amid a troubling time for the royal family following the news that King Charles III, 75, Kate, 42, and Sarah Ferguson, 64, are all facing cancer battles.

In light of this, Eugenie captioned the post: 'The best gift of all are my boys... so on this birthday I'm cherishing family and loved ones.'

Princess Eugenie marked her birthday two days after the announcement that her cousin's wife, the Princess of Wales, is battling cancer, the third member of the royal family to be diagnosed in recent months.

Princess Beatrice and Eugenie's mother, Sarah Ferguson, was diagnosed with skin cancer just months after having a mastectomy for breast cancer. Their uncle, King Charles, is also undergoing cancer treatments.

Nonetheless, in an optimistic fashion, Eugenie shared a thoughtful message celebrating family on her special day.

Looking typically chic, Eugenie donned a short-sleeved caramel jumper with a chunky signature headband in the image.

The mother-of-two accessorized her look with a pair of emerald earrings and a simple yet elegant gold chain.

Meanwhile, Ernest looked smart in a pair of blue corduroy trousers and a matching knitted jumper.
