New York mayor is ruthlessly mocked by Brits after introducing a 'trash revolution' - which is just a wheelie bin

The mayor of New York has been ruthlessly mocked by British people  after introducing a 'trash revolution' to the city, which is just the introduction of  wheelie bins.

Playing Jay Z's Empire State of Mind, Mayor Adams proudly rolled a black wheelie bin through a driveway and placed a black bin inside on Monday, before giving a speech about the 'pioneering' new way to a gathering of journalists.

After a clip was shared on social media, Brits took a chance to jibe at Adams - and Americans as a whole - saying the bins have been a staple outside all British homes since the 1980s.

'I can't tell you how obsessed I am with Americans acting like the wheelie bin is revolutionary. How long it took them to get Apple Pay suddenly makes sense,' one person wrote.

Speaking at the press conference, Adams referenced New York's vermin problem - with more than three million rats living in the biggest US city.

'Many people thought it was impossible that these babies here, the bins, were going to be part of our trash revolution,' he said.

'We are only catching up to what other municipalities across the globe, what they are currently doing.

'When I visit other countries, they are blown away that we still use plastic bags.

'We are leaders, we lead from the front and we're going to catch up with everyone else and get these plastic bags off the street.'

He added that Jessica Tisch, the New York City department of sanitation commissioner, was a 'visionary'.

'We all have one unified dislike and those are those pesky New York City rats,'

'They are getting more and more bold. They no longer run from you, they just hang out and just do what they want and we want to make sure we change that in a real way.'

'It is a real revolution, this is a rat-proof container and is going to do the job.'

New Yorkers will now be required to buy their own bins for $50 (£39).

After the clip was shared on X, formerly Twitter, people were quick to joke about New York being 'years behind' the rest of the world.

'Congratulations New York City on introducing the wheelie bin,' said one.

'Futurists predict one day they'll have brown versions for recycling. I don't see it catching on. Too many people would forget which week it was and put the wrong one out,' joked another.

'This is like when New Yorkers try to claim that their corner shops (bodegas) are super special and unique,' said one.

'This is a bindega. it's very different from a normal wheelie bin. you wouldn't understand if you're not from new york,' joked another.

'America again ahead of Europe on tech. To be called a 'wheelie bin',' said another.

'It's a wheelie bin. You've invented a wheelie bin,' one person joked.

'And still Americans on here say it's *Europeans* who are being left behind technologically,' added one.

'Americans discover the wheelie bin, beautiful,' one said.

'When will they stop innovating,' joked another.

'As a New Yorker who's lived in the UK for twenty years I feel so much second hand embarrassment,' commented one.

'It will be kettles next, mark my word,' commented ont.

' Wow my mind is blown!!! Lid! Wheels!' joked another.

'Next comes a letterbox actually integrated into the front door,' said one.

'I'm no expert but I am pretty sure this was invented just after the wheel,' said one.

'Everyone's making fun, but is there anything more beautiful than watching someone discover a wheelie bin for the first time,'.
