Florida children make terrifying discovery while playing in abandoned home

In a scene resembling a Hollywood coming-of-age film, a group of children in Florida made a horrifying discovery when they explored an abandoned house.

The local kids, all boys, were exploring their surroundings on Thursday when they came upon the home on Memorial Drive in Avon Park.

The boys decided to venture in for a short time and were stunned to discover skeletal remains.

Witnesses near the house said the boys came out telling them what they saw, all while looking 'white as sheets'.

Eventually police arrived on the scene to do an investigation into what was inside the house.

They told the Highlands News-Sun that they were able to find the remains of someone who'd died in the house.

Officials believed that the person had died as long ago as 12 months before the boys found them.

Local sheriff's deputies say that the bones were found surrounded by clothes that had only scattered a short distance away and collected dust.

A sleeping bag was also found nearby, which means it was likely the person was possibly staying there illegally when they died.

The house was abandoned and not ever discovered because it's covered by tall mimosa trees and other shrubbery.

They say that because of this, people driving by often don't even realize the home is there.

Police believe that the home has been left to rot for some time before the person's death.

Not only was the shrubbery allowed to overgrow but they found it completely dilapidated.

Officers even reported having heard a buzzing hive of bees inside the walls of the home.

The remains have yet to be identified, pending an investigation from the local medical examiner.

Public Information Officer Scott Dressel is using the incident to remind kids to stay away from homes like that.

He adds that they were at risk of not just disturbing themselves but the hive of bees inside.

The Highlands County Sheriff Office are asking anyone with information on the house or the person who died in it to reach out.
