Hollywood actress Chloe Grace Moretz has been keeping a heartbreaking secret - her father dumped her and her family and is now living with Paris Hilton's aunt.

Dr McCoy Moretz left his wife and five children seven years ago when his famous daughter was only 12 years old, in an episode that Chloe says is the most painful experience of her life and the 'ultimate betrayal'.

Her mother Teri Duke-Moretz was then dragged through the courts until they finally divorced in April after years of wrangling over their joint fortune.

Since her marriage fell apart, Teri has had to battle through cancer twice and raise Chloe and her four older brothers - Brandon, Colin, Trevor and Ethan single-handedly.

Ever since the 19-year-old hit the limelight in 2010 when she starred in the movie Kick-Ass, Chloe has managed to keep a lid on her secret family ordeal  even though it gave her post-traumatic stress disorder.

Chloe, who is now dating Brooklyn Beckham, credits her brothers for keeping her on the straight and narrow after being left 'betrayed by her bloodline'.

She told PEOPLE Magazine earlier this year: 'My brothers really protected me. They had a great bubble around me growing up. They really held my hand through it all. Without them I wouldn't really know who I would be right now.'

Until now, little of this family trauma has been known. Back in 2003, Dr McCoy, known as Mac, relocated the family to Los Angeles from their native Atlanta, Georgia.

Chloe's acting career was just taking off, the boys were all studying, and Mac was making a name for himself as one of the best plastic surgeons in the United States.

Four years later, he set up F.A.C.E of Beverly Hills, which he says  is an ethical, artistic way of looking at cosmetic surgery.

According to his LinkedIn, 'the focus of my facial plastic surgery practice blends art and science to create harmony and balance within one's facial structure'.

He uses traditional Chinese medicine to aid recovery.

He also invented a controversial product called the Breathalyzer Equalizer, a chewing gum that motorists can use to 'reduce the effects of residual mouth alcohol', therefore decreasing the risk of a false DUI on sober drivers, or some say, increasing the chances of drinkers being able to pass a roadside test.

Three years running, he was voted one of the 'Top Facial Plastic Surgeons in America' by the Consumer Research Council, a group that honors physicians across two dozen specialties, also not without some controversy about its methods.

He is an heir to the Moretz hosiery empire, which was bought out in 2011 for $350million.

As his professional career reached greater heights, his relationship with Chloe's mom Teri was falling apart.

When Chloe was only 12, Mac walked out.

Around the same time as the Moretz's marriage was crumbling, Jo-Ann Hilton was splitting up from her husband Ronnie, the grandson of Conrad, the founder of the Hilton Hotels chain.

The Hiltons finally split in July 2011 after 12 years of marriage.

It's not known when Jo and Mac met, but they had been on friendly terms since around that time.

There's a picture in July 2010 of Paris Hilton playing poker with friends, and a man believed to be Mac sitting  to her right.

Chloe was understandably left distraught that her father had deserted the family although she doesn't say if it involved another woman.

She told Glamour magazine in May: 'The things that he did are unforgivable,' and even gave her a 'slight case' of PTSD.

In the interview, she added: 'It definitely affected me at a young age in terms of accepting people into my life on a personal level.

'But I've overcome that in the past few years - dealing with relationships, dealing with guys.

'You don't realize why you're acting a certain way, and then you start to piece it together.'

In the years following Teri and Mac's split, Teri, a trained nurse, struggled to raise the family alone.

Thankfully, three of her boys had already graduated from college, and her youngest son, Ethan, was at Beverly Hills High School.

Chloe was the only one who needed Teri's full attention, so she became her manager and  brother Trevor was her acting coach.

The family dynamic was made even more complicated by the fact that two of Chloe's four brothers were gay, and 'were treated horrifically until they grew up and understood how to deal with it,' according to an interview Chloe gave to Seventeen Magazine in January 2013.

While Teri was focusing her attention on the tight-knit family, Mac was building up his surgery empire and also working for the charity Mending Kids Foundation.

By early 2013, Jo and Mac had officially become a couple and even worked on various charity projects together.

According to the movie database IMDB and her LinkedIn profile, Jo is a bit-part actress and charity worker.

They both count KISS bassist Gene Simmons and his actress wife Shannon Tweed among their closest friends, along with Sylvester Stallone's brother Frank, and Pamela Bach-Hasselhoff, the ex-wife of Baywatch actor David Hasselhof.

Mac has had regular appearances on CNN, NBC and Fox News promoting his surgery, and enjoys the high life, with regular skiing trips to Canada and summer holidays in Europe.

He even went to a charity polo match meeting famous faces such as Caitlyn Jenner.

It appears that Jo has never been welcome into Chloe's family, and even their father is ostracized - there is no mention of either of them on any social media channel used by other members of the family.

In Chloe's most revealing interview to date about her feelings towards her dad, she told London's The Sunday Times in August 2014 that he was a 'bad person' and didn't want any contact.

She said: 'He's just not a good guy. Some people are just bad people and there's no saving them, y'know? They do it to themselves.

'From the age of 13 I've pretty much had a life with a single mom, and my brother Trevor has been my father.

'Even when my dad was there, he was always in and out, working a lot. I never really knew him. Oh yeah, in a way [he tries to make contact], but I'd rather not be used.'

Mom Teri felt hurt by their ongoing divorce battle over their fortunes - which included Mac's share of the $350million sale of the Moretz hosiery company.

In June 2014, she took to Facebook to tell her friends: 'I am making the decision to move on and to only have those who love me and my children and have our best interests at heart close to me.

'Abandonment of a family and complete betrayal after an entire lifetime of loyalty and respect and treasure is simply not acceptable. To my loyal friends and my treasured family, I love you.'

It took her seven years to finally become a single woman and she took to Facebook again, last April, this time flanked by a bouquet of her favorite flowers bought by son Colin.

She said: '30 years and this is the end. Thank you to my sweet Colin for having daffodils and a cold drink waiting for me when I finally got home after a 12-hour mediation/hearing.

It's fair to say that Teri and her family have been put through the mill in life, as she also lost another daughter Kathleen Janette, who was born in 1988 and died the next day

'Be careful ladies...it's not fun but truth prevailed. My children were my heroes yesterday, today and forever.'

She admits that it was 'sad and disappointing' for it to end so painfully, especially as she'd had two health battles of her own to fight during the time of her marriage collapsing.

In 2007, Teri suffered from kidney cancer, then six years later, she was diagnosed with another form of cancer.

At the time, Chloe even took to Twitter to ask her fans: 'Please pray for my mama.'

But in July 2014, she was given the all-clear after treatment and an operation at Cedars Sinai Hospital, Los Angeles.

It deeply affected Chloe, she said: 'It made me realize, along with everything that happened with my dad, that your parents aren't these godly figures.

'They're not chosen by the heavens. They're humans. Their bodies can fail and they can die at any moment.'

Tragically, Teri also lost a daughter Kathleen Janette, who was born in 1988 and died the next day.

On her birthday, she posted: 'It seems like only yesterday that I saw her beautiful face and held her in my arms. How I miss you, my darling. I will never forget you. God had a plan for you that was greater than our little world.'

The family - minus dad - have what Chloe describes as an 'insanely' tight bond.

One look at their Instagram profiles and it's full of family dinners, parties and holidays - but there's not a single mention or picture of Mac.

In June 2015, Chloe got a tattoo on her right upper thigh with the letters TBTKCE, which are the initials of every sibling - Brandon, Trevor, Colin, Ethan and sister Kathleen - plus mom Teri, but dad didn't make it on the list.

Now that Chloe is two years into her first serious relationship with the Brooklyn Beckham, son of David and Victoria Beckham, she's finally become more trusting of men.

She said recently: 'It's hard because you become set in your ways that you're not the trusting one, because you've been messed over by the closest person in your life.

'But the fact is, there are people out there that are trustworthy that do deserve your trust and aren't going to mess you over. It takes a long time to realize that and to find those people, but they are out there.'

Brooklyn and Chloe have made several high-profile public outings and he's been accepted by the family, especially mom Teri, who dotes on her 'favorite Brit'.

Brooklyn, 17, joined the family at the Democratic National Convention last week where his girlfriend made a powerful speech encouraging young people to vote and endorsed Hillary Clinton as president.

Teri even shared a picture of Brooklyn and Chloe smiling into the camera, adding: 'Me and this one... London cool! SO happy to share our American political system with my favorite Brit!!'
