He looked in his element this week as he met leading actors and students alongside the Queen.

King Charles and Queen Camilla toured the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London in what was the monarch's latest engagement since returning to duties amid his cancer treatment.

His Majesty started work again on April 30 – when he fittingly University College Hospital Macmillan Cancer Centre in London – and, including Wednesday's appearance, there have been 12 engagements since then.

They have included his presence at the unveiling of artist Jonathan Yeo's controversial portrait of him, a visit to the Chelsea Flower Show and an outing at the first Buckingham Palace garden party of the year.

May 29 - Visit to RADA

On Wednesday, His Majesty and Camilla met staff, students and alumni at Rada.

The visit was the couple's first major public event since Rishi Sunak last week called a summer General Election.

The King and Queen met stars including Rada's president David Harewood and actress and singer Cynthia Erivo

Harewood is known for his roles in TV series Homeland and Supergirl, while Erivo starred in 2019 film Harriet and is playing Elphaba in the upcoming Wicked movie. 

The King, who acted in amateur productions during his days as a student at Cambridge, jokingly asked if applicants are put through 'the most horrendous auditions?'

May 22 - Reception for Ambassadors of Prince's Trust

Last week, the King  showed off his showbusiness credentials as he met with various celebrities at a reception for ambassadors of the Prince's Trust.

His Majesty met with stars including Penny Lancaster, Martin Freeman, and Declan Donnelly, as well as Paralympian Ellie Simmonds and TV presenter and DJ Tyler West - who chose to fist bump the King.

Dec told the sovereign: 'He's not here today and sends his apologies, he's got a week old baby, he's breastfeeding, or helping with.

Charles replied: 'Please give him my regards. Fantastic. Because you are amazing.'

May 20 - Chelsea Flower Show

The King and Queen made their customary visit to the Chelsea Flower Show on May 20.

His Majesty could not hide his amusement when he was given the title 'King of the Compost' by school children.  

Queen Camilla was handed a badge which read 'Queen of the Bees'.

Their Majesties were visiting the RHS No Adults Allowed Garden, designed by Harry Holding and children from Sulivan Primary School in London.

The King and Queen were accompanied by the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester and Prince Michael and Princess Michael of Kent.

There was also a small group of friends and relatives including Queen Camilla's daughter, Laura Lopes, her sister, Annabel Elliot and the Marquess and Marchioness of Cholmondeley.

May 16 - Royal Opera House Gala for Sir Antonio Pappano

The King appeared in great spirits as he attended a special gala performance at the Royal Opera House to celebrate outgoing music director Sir Antonio Pappano on May 16. 

His Majesty, 75, became Patron of the Royal Opera House in 2009 and is a huge fan of the arts, so it's no surprise that he looked in his element.

The special one-off gala performance celebrated Sir Antonio Pappano's 22-year tenure.

It featured renowned opera singers such as Aigul Akhmetshina, Jonas Kaufmann and Bryn Terfel, as well as The Royal Opera Chorus and The Orchestra of the Royal Opera House.

May 15 - Celebrities' Buckingham Palace garden party  and Service of Dedication at St Paul's

The King, 75, grinned as he greeted his many guests - including Maya Jama, Tess Daly and Vernon Kay - who were all dressed to perfection.

Charles looked dapper in a three-piece suit, patterned tie and black polished shoes.

The garden party topped off a busy day for the King and Queen, after the couple attended a service of dedication for the Order of the British Empire at St Paul's Cathedral earlier that day.  

At the church, they joined nearly 2,000 people who are holders of various royal honours.

Charles and Camilla were both wearing bright rose pink robes, also known as 'mantles' of the Order - and the King also had his naval uniform on underneath.

May 14 - Portrait Unveiling at Buckingham Palace

King Charles's new portrait, unveiled at a special ceremony on May 14, is nothing if not striking thanks to its scarlet hue.

But whilst some people praised Jonathan Yeo's painting as 'magnificent', others were more critical.

The painting was commissioned in 2020 to celebrate the then-Prince of Wales's 50 years as a member of The Drapers' Company.

It depicts His Majesty wearing the uniform of the Welsh Guards, of which he was made Regimental Colonel in 1975.

The painting is now on display at the Philip Mould Gallery in London until June 14. 

Yeo said a butterfly on the painting echoed the King's 'metamorphosis' from Prince to King during the process.  

May 13 - Visit to Hampshire Air Base

On May 13, during a visit to the Army Flying Museum in Middle Wallop, Hampshire, the King officially handed over the role of Colonel-in-Chief of The Army Air Corps to Prince William.

During the engagement, the King told Army veteran Aaron Mapplebeck that he lost his sense of taste during his cancer treatment. 

Mr Mapplebeck had told the sovereign that he had the experience while undergoing chemotherapy for testicular cancer last year.

May 9 - Visit to Royal School of Military Engineering

 In a surprise visit to the Royal School of Military Engineering on May 9, the King joked that he was glad to be 'out of my cage' as he embarked on his first military engagement since returning to public-facing duties.

Charles met military staff and their families at a training base for the Army's Royal Engineers in Surrey, while his son Prince William was on engagements in Cornwall and his wife Queen Camilla hosted a reception for an animal charity in London.

The King, who was in jovial form, asked a group of parents and pupils: 'I'm glad I got all these children out of school, are you going back after?' 

A child replied: 'No, day off today.' Charles then said: 'Oh, you see? I do have my uses occasionally.'

May 8 - Buckingham Palace Garden Party

On May 8, the King  joined other senior royals for the first royal party of the summer season.

He was accompanied by the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, the Princess Royal and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.

Charles - known for his sense of humour - seemed to be back to his usual personable self as he joked with the guests.

May 3 - Royal Windsor Horse Show

The King was present at the third day of the Royal Windsor Horse Show on May 3. 

He appeared to be in high spirits, with photos showing him smiling and pointing at the action. 

Other royals present included the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, Princess Anne and her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence.

May 2 - Presented with Coronation Roll

On May 2, almost a year to the day since they were crowned, King Charles and Queen Camilla were presented with the official recording of the proceedings, the Coronation Roll.

It is the first in history to be made from paper and not parchment – which is made from calf, goat or sheepskin – due to Charles's interest in animal welfare

Their Majesties were presented with the roll by Antonia Romeo, the Clerk of the Crown in Chancery.

Ms Romeo said the roll comprises 57 pages stitched together and contains around 11,600 handwritten words. 

The King said he was hugely impressed by 'the most marvellous illuminations'.

He jokingly asked if the document had 'all the right spellings', prompting Ms Romeo to reply: 'That's been checked many times, many times.'

'It's extraordinary, it goes right on to us leaving the abbey,' the King added.

The first Coronation Roll was created for Edward II and Queen Isabella in 1308.

The monarch appeared relaxed and in good spirits as he toured the  in London.

He sat down to chat to those receiving chemotherapy and told them he was 'well', 'alright' and 'not too bad'.

Charles - who also said it was a 'bit of a shock' to receive a cancer diagnosis - was joined by Queen Camilla. 

The visit was marked by the King being named as the new patron of Cancer Research UK.
