Nick Riewoldt has shared how he thought he was living through a horrifying movie after being caught up in Hurricane Beryl.

The footy legend, 41, lives in Texas with his wife Catherine and their young family of three boys, and relived the moment the devastating cyclone passed through Houston this week.

'Bloody Beryl, it's armageddon outside,' Riewoldt said on his podcast, Footy Talk.

'It's about two in the morning, I heard it come through. Seriously I thought the whole house was shaking. I have never experienced a hurricane before.

'A lot of people are pretty casual about it because Houston has been pounded over the years with Katrina and Ike. It was pretty full on.'

Riewoldt revealed that the only casualties at his home was the outdoor furniture he forgot to bring inside, otherwise his family were safe from the torrid weather.

'The fence has fallen over and limbs down everywhere, a lot of trees down and no power, gee it's a pain in the a …,' he said.

'I reckon I tried to turn on 14 light switches … it's amazing how dumb you can be. A lot of people have generators so I'm around at a friend's place whose got a generator.

'(My son) Will was having a sleepover which probably wasn't the most responsible thing, Teddy was fine and James is away he's in Arkansas. Teddy held down the fort.'

Riewoldt has been exposed to some unusual experiences since leaving Australia for the States. In April, the 41-year-old revealed how he had a close shave with a snake.

'Learnt a pretty valuable lesson about ranch life, and that is it's not like the beach, you've always got to have a pair of boots on,' he said.

'I went out to get a piece of wood to chuck it on the fire, it was dark outside. Being the ranch type I am, I felt pretty confident in my surrounds.

'I walked out and I was looking for the light switch and I was walking along this wall and I looked down and I'd trodden on something, couldn't quite figure out what it was til it started going tsk tsk tsk … it was a bloody rattle snake.

'I had trodden on it with my barefoot. Somehow it didn't strike and slithered off. I absolutely lost it. I don't think I've ever shit myself that hard in my life. I was absolutely terrified. It was a bit of a close call for me.'
