LORD'S RATINGS: Gus Atkinson had a dream debut and Jimmy Anderson showed why he'll be missed - but which England star looked rusty in dominant win over West Indies?

  • Seam bowler Gus Atkinson took 12 wickets on his Test debut at Lord's
  • Jimmy Anderson also picked up four wickets in his farewell Test appearance
  • One England player did look rusty in England's first Test of the summer

England beat West Indies by an innings and 114 runs at Lord's to get their summer of Test cricket up and running.

Gus Atkinson was flawless on debut as he picked up 12 wickets to get himself on the Lord's honours board.

The departing Jimmy Anderson also showed why he has been the most successful seam bowler in history by taking four wickets to finish on a remarkable 704 wickets in 188 matches. It is a mark that will likely never be beaten by a pace bowler.

But it wasn't the perfect performance, with some players having quiet outings in the first of six Tests over the next two months.

Mail Sport's LAWRENCE BOOTH was on hand to rate England's stars...

Zak Crawley, 7.5 - Has become England’s banker, averaging just under 50 since the start of last summer. But he needs to turn one of his many half-centuries into a big one.

Ben Duckett, 4 - The only member of the top five not to pass 50 after aiming a loose drive at Jayden Seales. Will fancy the next Test, at his home ground in Nottingham.

Ollie Pope, 7 - He needed runs after falling away badly in India, but still looks frenetic - a tendency that will be exploited by stronger sides.

Joe Root, 7.5 - Seemed odds on for an effortless hundred until he was beaten by Motie’s arm-ball. A summer of runs beckons.

Harry Brook, 7 - His first Test innings in almost a year brought him his 12th score of 50-plus in 21 knocks. But, like Crawley, he could do with a hundred.

Ben Stokes, 7 - Another failure with the bat was off-set by two reassuringly long, energetic spells. His bowling balances the side beautifully.

Jamie Smith, 8 - A memorable debut, on both sides of the stumps. Some of his leg-side takes were immaculate, and his batting with the lower order was just what McCullum and Stokes were hoping for.

Chris Woakes, 5 - Rusty and dusty with the ball, especially in the first innings, when his average speed was below 80mph. Useful runs in partnership with Smith.

Gus Atkinson, 9 - A dream debut: seven wickets in the first innings, 12 in the match, and the sense that England had embarked on their next era of fast bowlers.

Shoaib Bashir, 5 - Hard to give England’s off-spinner a rating: he didn’t bowl at all, and was run out for a 17-ball duck. Still, he can always say he played in Anderson’s last Test.

James Anderson, 8 - The outpouring of affection for England’s greatest fast bowler was moving and heartfelt. He finishes with 704 Test wickets at 26.45. We’ll miss him.
