Newcastle have ended their interest in signing Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, with the decision likely to end the Toffees pursuit of Yankuba Minteh.

Talks had been ongoing between the clubs over a potential deal for Calvert-Lewin.

Newcastle have now opted to walk away having deemed the £40million asking price to be too costly.

Mail Sport understands Everton would have only been willing to sell the forward in the event a deal could be struck for Minteh.

Everton had offered around £30m for Minteh, but French side Lyon are understood to be willing to pay Newcastle's asking price of closer to £40m for the teenage winger.

Despite ending their interest in Calvert-Lewin, Newcastle are understood to be assessing options as Eddie Howe targets a forward this summer.

Newcastle still want another winger themselves after missing out on top target Michael Olise at Crystal Palace who is joining Bayern Munich.

Calvert-Lewin has been on Newcastle's radar for over a year but they had concerns over his injury record. However, he put work in on his conditioning last summer so that he was more robust and was able to lead the line at Everton for most of the season.

With a year left on his current deal, Everton have offered him a new contract.

Chelsea showed tentative interest but are now looking at younger options, while Man United are unlikely to meet Everton's asking price.

AC Milan have shown an interest in Calvert-Lewin, with the Serie A side wanting a replacement for Olivier Giroud, who has joined LAFC in the MLS.

Calvert-Lewin, 27, joined Everton in August 2016 from Sheffield United and has gone on to return 68 goals in 247 appearances across all competitions for the Merseyside outfit.

He has been capped 11 times for England and was called up to Gareth Southgate's side for the Three Lions' Euro 2020 campaign.

Newcastle teenager Minteh enjoyed a stand-out season on loan at Feyenoord, under new Liverpool boss Arne Slot, scoring 11 goals - ten in the league.

He joined Newcastle from Danish side OB last year for £6million and was immediately sent out on loan.

The Gambia international gained Champions League experience and ended the season by winning the Dutch Cup but was sent off in the process.

Brighton are among the clubs to have shown an interest.
