During his time in the Midlands, the striker promised to explain the story behind his celebration - where he locks his fingers on boths hands and uses them to cover his mouth and nose to create a mask.

He posted a video on Instagram showing his goals and celebration during the 2023-24 season and used the caption: 'Nobody cared until I put on the mask.'

That is a quote from Bane, a supervillain appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics, with the character appearing in several batman movies too.

Gyokeres provided hope to potential suitors last month after being asked about his future after just one season with Sporting Lisbon.

He said: 'It's football, I can't promise anything. I have a contract and I won't be sad if I stay, I'm very happy, but we'll see what happens.

'We can't predict much, but let's see what next year will be like, we still have games this season.'

Gyokeres previously played for Premier League outfit Brighton with the Seagulls signing the forward as a teenager.

He spent time on loan at St Pauli, Swansea and Coventry, before joining the Sky Blues on a permanent basis in 2021.

Sporting moved for the forward last summer after he scored 22 goals in 50 matches for Coventry, with the club missing out on promotion to the Premier League after losing to Luton in the play-off final.

Gyokeres signed a five-year deal with the club announcing the forward has a €100m (£85m) release clause, with reports Coventry will be due 15 per cent of a future fee.
