Newcastle United winger Miguel Almiron has emerged as a target for Al-Ettifaq.

The Paraguay international held discussions with Al Shabab in January but wanted to stay and help Newcastle push towards European qualification.

Now Steven Gerrard's Al-Ettifaq are understood to have made an approach with Newcastle willing to accept suitable offers.

Almiron cost a then club record £20million when he joined from Atlanta United in 2019 and he has proved good value but at 30 and with two years left on contract, Newcastle are ready to sell as they look to maintain a younger squad.

Newcastle have already sold Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson in the last 24 hours to raise £68million and alleviate their PSR concerns but selling Almiron will give them extra room for manoeuvre.

The Saudi Pro League window opened on Monday and Al Ettifaq are looking to strengthen. They already have a foreign contingent of Jack Hendry, Georginio Wijnaldum, Demarai Gray, Alvaro Medran and Moussa Dembele but are ready to make changes after a disappointing sixth place finish in the league last season.

Almiron scored eight goals in his first full season at St James' Park, but found the net just six times in the next two campaigns combined.

Eddie Howe's arrival on Tyneside, however, breathed a new lease of life in Almiron's career, with the Paraguay international scoring 11 goals in the 2022-23 campaign.

The winger remained a regular starter last season but managed just three goals in 33 Premier League appearances and was hampered by a knee injury in the final months.
