A shocking stat has emerged about Cristiano Ronaldo after a compilation of his shots in the knockouts of major international tournaments surfaced.

Portugal were knocked out of Euro 2024 in the quarter-final stage after losing to France in a penalty shootout.

And while Ronaldo converted his spotkick successfully, it marked the end of a frustrating tournament for the forward.

The 39-year-old failed to score a single goal in this summer's European Championships having confirmed it was his last one.

In fact, there was a continuance of his poor record in the knockout stages of major international tournaments.

Ronaldo has taken 93 shots for Portugal in the knockouts of European Championships and World Cups.

However, he has scored just three goals from those 93 shots despite his prolific record throughout his career.

His first goal in a knockout game came against the Netherlands in the semi-finals of Euro 2004 where Portugal went on to lose against Greece in the final.

Ronaldo's second goal in knockouts came eight years later, scoring a header against Czechia at Euro 2012.

The former Manchester United forward's latest goal in knockouts came against Wales in the semi-final of Euro 2016 where Portugal went on to triumph.

He has since appeared in the knockouts of two European Championships and two World Cups without scoring.

Ronaldo had a golden chance to end the drought in this summer's tournament when Roberto Martinez's men were awarded an extra-time penalty in the last-16 against Slovenia.

However, he was denied by Jan Oblak, who superbly dived to his left and Ronaldo broke into tears shortly after.

'Sometimes it's hard and difficult to score penalties,' Ronaldo told Portuguese broadcaster RTP after the match, getting emotional again. 'I've scored more than 200 penalties in my career. Sometimes it's a mess.'
