Manchester United have agreed  a deal with Villarreal for the sale of academy graduate Willy Kambwala.

The 19-year-old defender made 10 appearances for the first team last season, including eight in the Premier League and two in the Old Trafford club's successful FA Cup campaign.

Kambwala joined United from French club Sochaux in 2020 and was handed his senior debut by Erik ten Hag in a 2-0 loss by West Ham last December amid a defensive injury crisis.

However, United are ready to offload the youngster and have agreed a deal with Spanish side Villarreal for £9.8m.

The Red Devils will receive an initial payment of £4.7m with the rest in add-ons. The deal also includes a buy-back option and matching rights for three years, with a sizeable share of any sell-on.

Kambwala, who is a France youth international, has only one year remaining on his current deal and had rejected the club's most recent offer.

The move reflects an approach on making sure they get a return on their academy players if they aren't going to become first-team regulars or commit when a contract is offered.

However, United have protected themselves by including a buy-back option and sell-on fee.

His last appearance for the club came as a substitute in the 1-0 home defeat by title-chasing Arsenal at Old Trafford in May.

United have made a number of changes to the playing staff ahead of their first full season under the new footballing structure led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos.

The club have kept faith with Ten Hag and opted to extend his contract by a year, in a deal that will keep him in the dug out until 2026.

United are closing in on deals for Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee and Bayern Munich defender Matthijs De Ligt now the Netherlands are out of Euro 2024.

Zirkzee could be announced as early as tomorrow.
