World Cup star Trippier is AXED from England's Nations League squad... but Harry Kane is passed fit
- Gareth Southgate has announced his 23-man squad for the Nations League
- The England boss found no place for Tottenham right-back Kieran Trippier
- Harry Winks, Nathan Redmond and James Ward-Prowse also miss out
- England captain Harry Kane did make the cut following his injury troubles
Kieran Trippier has missed out on a chance to add an international trophy to his World Cup heroics in Russia after being omitted by Gareth Southgate from the England squad for next week's UEFA Nations League finals.
Southgate has cut the 27-man squad he selected a fortnight ago to the 23 names he had to provide to UEFA on Monday night and Trippier is the big name casualty along with fellow Tottenham player Harry Winks and Southampton duo Nathan Redmond and James Ward-Prowse.
Ward-Prowse and Redmond will, however, remain in training with the rest of the group at St George's Park.
Gareth Southgate has announced his 23-man England squad for the Nations League finals
England captain Harry Kane has made the 23-man squad but Kieran Trippier has been axed
It was less than 12 months ago that Trippier emerged as one of the stars of England's World Cup campaign, excelling on the right flank and scoring a free-kick in the semi-final against Croatia. He was considered England's best dead-ball specialist since David Beckham.
But Trippier has at times struggled with his form this season, making just three appearances for England, and he has lost out to Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has been outstanding for Liverpool, and Manchester City's Kyle Walker.
The squad does, of course, include Harry Kane but there is no place for Winks, who like Kane has been sidelined recently by injury. Declan Rice is named, as expected, among the midfielders.
Southgate, who must hope the England players involved come through the Europa League and Champions League finals unscathed ahead of next week's semi-final clash against Holland in Guimaraes, said on Monday: 'Of course, Kieran Trippier has had such a big impact.
'He had such a brilliant World Cup. He has been a really valuable member of our squad and has a great attitude with us, real passion in playing for England but Trent [Alexander-Arnold] and Kyle [Walker] have finished the season so strongly.
'So it is a position where we have got real competition for places. That is as hard a decision as we have had to make.
'Harry Winks is a player we really like and that's a tough one because he has not played for a couple of months and we don't get to see him in training.
James Ward-Prowse (L) and Nathan Redmond (R) also missed out on a Nations League spot
'He is back training with Spurs, he might be involved at the weekend but we wouldn't see him until two days before the game. So when we had other midfielders who are either with us or who are playing regularly, that was the only thinking behind that decision.
'Harry could still come into that mix and has done very well for us whenever he has played with England, so is a player we like.
'There has been some difficult decisions to make and we are obviously a little bit complicated with so many players involved in the Champions League as well but we are really excited by the squad and the players that are around it.'
