From Shannon Noll's spinal injury to Mark Holden's clown meltdown and a shock arrest : DWTS Australia's most dramatic moments as Julie Goodwin has a bad accident on-set

Dancing With The Stars Australia has been thrown into chaos this year after Julie Goodwin was forced to postpone her big debut after suffering a shock injury.

The MasterChef season one winner, 53, was due to take to the dance floor on Sunday with dance partner Andrey Gorbunov, but was forced to withdraw from round one at last minute.

Just moments before her first performance, Julie sustained a 'sudden' grade two calf muscle tear which 'took her breath away' and left her in agony.

Her future on the show looks uncertain, with a six-week recovery time for the injury, but Julie remains optimistic and is determined to return to the competition.

Injuries have previously sent devastated celebrity contestants packing, while the dance competition has also been hit by other dramatic scandals over the years.

From Shannon Noll's grueling spinal operation to Mark Holden's memorable meltdown, there have been several eye-opening moments.

Shannon Noll's brutal spine injury

Shannon Noll has been dealing with 'chronic back pain' for many years since suffering a shocking injury on Dancing With The Stars.

The Australian Idol star, 48, signed up for the twelfth series of the popular show in 2012, but was forced to withdraw after suffering a severe spinal injury.

He pulled out on the fourth week of the show after injuring himself while rehearsing a lift with professional dance partner Elena Samodanova.

'I'm really sorry that I couldn't keep going in the competition. It's sad that this happened the way it did,' he shared at the time.

The singer suffered from chronic pain for years afterwards before undergoing a spinal fusion operation in August 2019 to treat the issue.

The operation is used to correct problems with small bones in the spine, fusing together two or more of them so they heal into a solid bone.

He was warned that the pain could last up to 10 years if he didn't get the fusion on his L5 and a replacement disc.

Two months after the operation, he told how the pain had started to subside, seven years after the initial injury on the show.

It is not the first time an injury has rocked the show after Shannon Noll was forced to withdraw because of a spinal injury sustained while practicing a lift with Elena Samodanova

Mark Holden's meltdown after THAT controversial dance

Mark Holden was paired up with professional dancer Jessica Prince when he signed up for the 2014 edition of the show.

However, he likely didn't anticipate his stint on the show going down in history as one of its most memorable because of his bizarre clown dance.

The singer, 70, left the judges and viewers alike when he took to the dance floor dressed as a terrifying clown to dance to Madness' 1982 hit House of Fun.

The disaster performance was widely ridiculed on social media at the time and landed him a mere one point from each judge - the lowest score since 2007.

He was forced to apologise for his 'inappropriate' outburst after his dance as he had an eyebrow-raising meltdown, which has been deemed one of the show's most embarrassing moments.

After the cringeworthy dance, Mark walked up to host Daniel MacPherson afterwards and said in a creepy voice: 'Do you like balloons Danny. I can get you a balloon.'

Upon getting some dismal feedback, he then told judge Kym Johnson: 'I need to sit you down on my knee young girl and have a bloody good conversation.'

He later claimed judge Todd McKenney had a 'vendetta' against him and urged him to go on another competition to deal with the 'excruciating' criticism.

Arguably the show's most famous moment was when Mark Holden had a bizarre meltdown after receiving a low score for his controversial clown dance with Jessica Prince

'Who has Dancing with The Stars made stars of? Kerri-Anne Kennerley nail in the coffin... Ian 'Dicko' Dickson, never heard of again on the show, may as well have left the country,' he fumed to AAP at the time.

He later apologised for his outburst on the radio and told how his wife Anna had been 'deeply ashamed' of his behaviour and had slept in a different room that night.

'I was possessed by a clown. I'll never watch it back. Any offence that the clown caused, I wish to apologise for,' he told The Kyle and Jackie O Show.

He said Channel Seven producers were also less than impressed, adding: 'They did take me aside. They weren't happy. They were all trying to shut me down. I should've shut up.

'I'm deeply ashamed. I'm looking back at what happened the night before and I'm thinking 'was I really part of that?'

The following week, his dance partner Jessica taped his mouth shut to avoid another outburst after he took to the dance floor in a bizarre Vladimir Putin inspired outfit to dance to AC/DC's Highway To Hell.

After his second controversial performance, he was eliminated from the dance competition, but his outbursts have been still gone down in the show's history.

Paul Fenech's arrest

Paul Fenech had been set to take to the dance floor for the 2014 series of Dancing With The Stars, but shocked fans when he withdrew before the show even aired.

The Fat Pizza creator stepped down from the competition because of a 'private matter', with Paul claiming he had injured himself.

'Earlier this week, because of a private matter, Paul resigned from the cast of the next series of DWTS,' a spokesperson said at the time.

While Paul wrote on social media: 'Sorry people bailed from dancing show... Crazy busy finishing the movie and have a crack at my knee... You can't argue with knee cartilage.'

It later emerged that Paul had been arrested for an alleged assault on a taxi driver before he stepped down from the TV show.

He was accused of being involved in an violent altercation in Sydney's central business district on August 22, 2014.

'He was arrested on charges of common assault. He is due to appear in court on 15 October 2014,' police officer Malcolm Searel from Day Street Police Station confirmed at the time.

The Daily Telegraph reported that Paul was picked up on the corner of Sydney's York and Jamison streets after a taxi driver claimed the actor had attacked him. He was taken to Sydney's Day Street station and later released.

Kyly Clarke's steamy kiss

Kyly Clarke made a very memorable debut on Dancing With The Stars in 2014 when she kissed her professional dance partner Damian Whitewood.

The now-ex-wife of Michael Clarke made a steamy arrival on the dance floor as she kicked off her routine by laying a tender kiss on Damian's lips.

Getting up close and personal, she even ran her hands across Damien's chest and flung herself into his arms in one daring, gravity-defying leap.

'It didn't come naturally whatsoever!' she insisted. 'It was really difficult to be honest, but Damien is such a professional.'

Kyly's steamy debut paid off as she was heaped with praise from the judges for the 'breathtaking' performance and saw her fly to the top of the leaderboard.

'I'm so thankful that its finished!' she admitted at the time with a sigh of relief. 'Those four weeks [of preparation] finally pair off.'

Kyly Clarke's emotional withdrawal

Though she got off to a flying start on the show, Kyly was left devastated when she was forced to withdraw due to an injury.

After tearing her right hamstring, Kyly hung up her dance shoes and made the difficult decision to step down from the competition.

She was advised by her doctor that if she continued dancing, she ran the risk of tearing the tendon off the bone, which would have required surgery.

'The doctor really had to convince me I couldn't do the show,' Kyly said at the time as she shared her devastation.

'I'm devastated, upset and disappointed. I didn't think I'd be leaving the show this way,' she added, after she had been tipped as the favourite to win the series.

Kyly's then-husband Michael said on social media at the time: 'Devastated for my wife @KylyClarke. I might be a little biased but I believe she would have won.'

Michael and Kyly went their separate ways in 2019 after seven years of marriage. They share a daughter Kelsey Lee, eight.

Fifi Box's painful tumble down the stairs

Fifi Box made it all the way to the Dancing With The Stars final in 2007, but had almost been forced to withdraw from the program.

Disaster nearly struck not long ahead of the grand final as the radio host shockingly fell down the studio's famous staircase during rehearsals.

Video footage aired on the show saw Fifi taking a misstep and plummeting down the iconic staircase, taking her dance partner Paul Green down with her.

'It was quite dramatic, we were very, very seriously concerned about you because you fell face first down the stairs,' Daryl Somers explained.

Fifi was at first unsure if she had broken her ankle and had to go for X-rays, revealing on the show that she was unsure if she would be able to continue dancing.

Through tears, an emotional Fifi said on the show: 'The doctor hasn't given me the OK yet, but hopefully... if we can.'

She was left with torn ligaments and a heavily bruised ankle, but soldiered on through her performance, determined not to cut her journey on the show short.

'I'm on so many painkillers and drugs that I won't even remember this,' she said.

Though she managed to recover from the injury, singer and actress Kate Ceberano ultimately took home the esteemed title in a disappointing blow to Fifi.

Torah Bright's toe injury

Australian snowboarding gold medalist Torah Bright was forced to pull out of Dancing With The Stars in 2014 after injuring her foot.

She injured her big toe in rehearsals and quit on medical advice after undergoing tests at a Melbourne hospital.

Though she did not break her toe, it was left seriously bruised and swollen, meaning she was unable to keep dancing.

'This show, it waits for nobody. If you can't walk, you can't dance,' she said at the time.

'It could be just a really good toe jam and in a week the swelling will be all right but for now, I'm just keeping it elevated and staying off my feet.'

'It is not the way I wanted to go but it is what it is. I'm disappointed for sure,' she confessed.

'Coming into this show, I knew I would be out at some point but not because of an injury, it is never fun to go that way.'

Injuries were previously very rare on the competition, but 2014 saw both Torah and Kyly withdraw because of injuries.
