In The Poseidon Adventure, a tsunami causes a massive wave to crash into an ocean liner, tipping it upside down. As the ship slowly begins to sink, the passengers and crew inside are forced to race to the bowels of the ship (which are now above water) to escape. Into the Storm

Into the Storm very much feels like a spiritual sequel to Twister. The movie takes place in a small Oklahoma town where a cluster of tornadoes have touched down, creating the largest storm in the state’s history. There’s also fire tornadoes and even a massive mile-wide F-5 that flattens the town. Picking up after the events of the cult-favorite TV series Firefly, Serenity brought back much of the original cast like Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, and Summer Glau. The film follows the crew of the Serenity as they navigate the galaxy, trying to defeat the evil Reavers. Godzilla

While he might not be a dinosaur… he’s basically kind of a dinosaur? Either way, 2014’s Godzilla is big, awesome, and destroys everything in sight. Anyone who loves the dino carnage in Jurassic Park will surely be a Godzilla fan.

King Kong

Unlike the new MonsterVerse storyline, in Peter Jackson’s 2005 film, Skull Island is inhabited by dinos that are modeled after real dinosaurs. For example, one of the big fight scenes involves Kong and a “V-Rex”, a creature heavily influenced by the real-life tyrannosaurids family. Other creatures in the movie are heavily inspired by dinosaurs like brontosauruses and velociraptors. For a more fantastical vision of dinosaurs, King Kong is a sure bet.

In 65, Adam Driver plays a space pilot who crash lands on a mysterious planet filled with giant monsters. But it’s later revealed that he’s actually an alien who crash-landed on Earth in the days before the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event. So the monsters are actually dinosaurs. Whereas Jurassic Park brought dinos into the modern world, 65 shows a person lost in the time of dinosaurs.

Deep Blue Sea

While not technically centered around dinosaurs, Deep Blue Sea has a lot in common with Jurassic Park. In the movie, a trio of genetically modified mako sharks escape their enclosures during a storm and cause absolute bloodshed… sound familiar? Plus, sharks are considered “living dinosaurs” since they’ve been evolving for hundreds of millions of years, somehow outliving numerous mass extinction events. So when you think about it, Deep Blue Sea actually is about dinosaurs.

Tammy and the T-Rex

Let’s face it, we all love the T-Rex in Jurassic Park. The name literally means “tyrant lizard”, so what’s not to love? For more T-Rex madness, check out Tammy and the T-Rex. In the film, a high schooler (Paul Walker) has his brain inserted into a giant robotic T-Rex, and then he sets out for revenge against everyone who wronged him. The film is campy, bonkers, wild, and tons of fun.

Anaconda

Sure, it’s not technically a dinosaur. But a giant 25-foot anaconda is basically one. After all, there really was a prehistoric snake called the Titanboa which could reach 40 feet long, so the movie isn’t as fictitious as you might think. The film follows an Amazonian expedition that unfortunately encounters the giant anaconda, and before long, the researchers are fighting for their lives.

Tremors

If giant snakes aren’t scary enough for you, how about creepy, slithery worms… that are the size of a school bus? In Tremors, a small desert town is terrorized by giant, burrowing (and predatory) wormlike creatures. Starring Kevin Bacon and Reba McEntire, the film is tons of fun and is an often-overlooked creature feature that deserves to be watched.

Splice

In Jurassic Park, the real villains are the humans who try to play God. If you want another movie about scientists manipulating DNA for all the wrong reasons, look no further than Splice. In the movie, a scientific duo creates a human-animal hybrid… and that’s when things get weird. Not only does the creature kill the couple’s cat and have sex with Adrien Brody, but then she undergoes a Sequential hermaphroditic transformation and becomes male, and then tries to murder them both. Ah, nature!

Cloverfield

Sure, Cloverfield is about an alien and not a dinosaur, but we all know damn well that dino fans can’t resist watching a giant 30-story alien monster destroy Manhattan. Plus, when Cloverfield came out in 2008, it was basically the lone monster movie of that decade and reignited interest in the genre. Without Cloverfield, we likely wouldn’t have Pacific Rim, the MonsterVerse, or Jurassic World.

Congo

In Congo, an expedition into the Congolian rainforest discovers a rare breed of grey, murderous gorillas who inhabit a diamond mine. While the movie is pretty different from Jurassic Park, the lush jungle setting, animal enemies, and “nature finds a way” plotline definitely give off some major Jurassic Park vibes. The reason why is because, just like many of Kubrick’s films, The Shining doesn’t always reveal its meaning so easily, and instead is filled with haunting, sometimes bizarre imagery that continues to stick with viewers to this day. In the modern age, a film like this would be controversial, but in 1964 when Dr. Strangelove premiered (during the height of the Cold War), it was downright shocking and seen by some as anti-American. But Kubrick stood strong with his vision of what unchecked warfare would look like and Dr. Strangelove ultimately became a massive success, earning four Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director.

In 1997, the world was introduced to Buddy, the basketball-playing golden retriever in the film Air Bud. In the movie, Buddy escapes his abusive owner and finds a kid practicing basketball by himself. The film wasn’t necessarily a box office hit, grossing just over $27 million…but compared to its small budget of $3 million, it turned a solid profit.

From there, we got another cinematic sequel, Air Bud: Golden Receiver, which follows Buddy joining the high school football team. The film was ultimately a box office dud, making Golden Receiver the only other theatrically-released Air Bud movie. But Air Bud was very successful throughout the following years thanks to the home rental market, and the franchise got numerous straight-to-video sequels like Air Bud: Seventh Inning Fetch (baseball), and Air Bud: Spikes Back (volleyball).

In 2006, a new spin-off film series was launched called Air Buddies. Designed for younger kids, the films follow a group of puppies who go on various adventures. Death Note is the latest manga/anime to receive a Netflix live-action TV show adaptation. The new series will be produced by the Duffer Brothers’ production company Upside Down Pictures. The franchise began in 2006 with Death Note, an anime series based on the manga of the same name. The Star Trek franchise began in 1966 with the premiere of Star Trek, also known as Star Trek: The Original Series. Created by Gene Roddenberry, the sci-fi series follows Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and First Officer Spock (Leonard Nimoy) as they guide the Enterprise on a mission of intergalactic space exploration. While the show received poor ratings during its three-season run, broadcast syndication and reruns breathed new life into the franchise, garnering it a cult following after its 1969 cancelation.

Following the show’s re-evaluation, Roddenberry convinced Paramount to continue the original series on the big screen with Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Although it wasn’t a huge box-office hit, it did well enough to earn five more sequels, for which Roddenberry was a consultant.

As Star Trek: The Original Series remained one of the most popular syndicated TV shows years after its release, Paramount and Gene Roddenberry began working on another live-action series: Star Trek: The Next Generation. Star Trek: The Next Generation also continued on the big screen after its conclusion, receiving four feature films. The movie picks up after the first film and continues following the remaining members of the Abbott family as they’re forced to find refuge in a new home. That same year PAW Patrol also received the spinoff series Rubble & Crew, which has also been renewed for a new season.

Deadpool’s live-action career on the big screen had a shaky start with X-Men Origins: Wolverine. In 1991, The Silence of the Lambs premiered and chilled audiences to their core. The film follows young FBI agent Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) as she works to stop a killer known as Buffalo Bill, who kidnaps women and skins them. To ensure her success, she seeks the help of renowned forensic psychiatrist Hannibal Lecter. The problem is that Lecter is a serial killer himself and has his own nefarious intentions. Trapped between two killers, Starling must walk a tightrope to save Buffalo Bill’s victims, while also keeping herself alive.

But The Silence of the Lambs isn’t the original Hannibal Lecter story. The movie was actually adapted from a sequel novel written in 1988. The original Hannibal book came out in 1981 and was titled Red Dragon. The Silence of the Lambs also wasn’t the first Hannibal movie. It was actually 1986’s Manhunter that first brought the infamous cannibal to the big screen (though he was played by Brian Cox instead of Anthony Hopkins). The movie is based on the original Red Dragon novel and centers on a detective who is almost murdered by Lecter. But once a new serial killer called the Tooth Fairy begins murdering families, he’s forced to seek Lecter’s help to save lives. In 2002, another film adaptation of Red Dragon arrived, this time having Hopkins reprise his now-iconic role as Lecter.

In 2006 a prequel novel was released titled Hannibal Rising, which then became the earliest entry in the series chronologically. The following year, a film adaptation premiered, this time with Gaspard Ulliel portraying the younger Hannibal Lecter. The film shows how Lecter’s tortured childhood during World War II caused him to become desensitized to murder while also leaving him with long-lasting, unresolved trauma, thus explaining his descent into murder and cannibalism.

The final entry in the Hannibal series is 2001’s Hannibal. Based on the 1999 novel of the same name, the film takes place a decade after The Silence of the Lambs, and Clarice Starling is now played by Julianne Moore. The movie is far more outlandish than the previous entries and shows a strange bond develop between Starling and Lecter. The movie is also filled with way more gore than the previous films, including wild hog mutilations, eating human brains, and more. Still, Hannibal was a huge success at the box office.
