Few things are more captivating than a con man in action, especially when the stakes reach deadly heights.
Ripley, written, directed, and executive produced by Academy Award winner Steve Zaillian (The Irishman, The Night Of), will immerse you in a suspense-filled journey set in Italy in the ’60s. Andrew Scott (All of Us Strangers, Fleabag) leads the eight-episode limited series as the roguish protagonist Tom Ripley. You can check out the trailer above, as well as find out everything else you need to know about the forthcoming thriller. Are you ready to dive into the mind of Tom Ripley?
Scott’s Tom Ripley is a grifter scraping by in early ’60s New York. He’s hired by a wealthy industrialist to travel to Italy to try to convince the man’s dilettante son, Dickie Greenleaf (Johnny Flynn), to return home. Accepting the job is Tom’s first step into a complex life of deceit, fraud, and murder.
A small-time con man in New York City, Tom Ripley is barely scraping by when a lucrative, unexpected offer brings him to Italy, and provides him a chance at reinvention. “A petty criminal who feels he deserves better than his meager circumstances,” is how Steven Zaillian described the character to Netflix, adding that Scott is the man for the role because “he has the range to play the many personas of Ripley.”
Fleabag, All of Us Strangers
Dickie Greenleaf’s girlfriend Marge suspects that darker motives underlie Tom’s affability. Fanning’s performance in Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood convinced Zaillian she was the perfect person to go toe-to-toe with Tom Ripley. Marge, he said, is “too smart to be conned and can threaten his schemes.”
The Equalizer, The First Lady
A rich, entitled self-proclaimed artist, Dickie spends his days in a villa on the Italian coast. To Zaillian, Flynn brings out the“sweet naïveté beneath [Dickie’s] outward confidence, along with that laconic ease people who don’t have to worry about money have.”
Emma, The Outfit
Snobbish playwright Freddie butts heads with Ripley when they first meet, distrustful of this new interloper in Dickie’s circle. Zaillian was drawn to Sumner’s “quiet, knowing, sophisticated” embodiment of the character.
The Gentlemen, No Time to Die
The Italian homicide detective is dapper and dogged, but increasingly mystified by the murder investigation he finds himself leading.
The New Pope, Citadel: Diana
Tom’s landlady in Rome.
Mia madre, Days and Clouds
Another American abroad, Minot is a mysterious figure who befriends Ripley.
Burn After Reading, Being John Malkovich
Dickie’s father, who hires Tom to travel to Italy and convince his son to return to the family business.
White Noise, Manchester By the Sea
Dickie’s mother.
A League of Their Own, Stigmata
Yes! The limited series is based on Patricia Highsmith’s bestselling Tom Ripley novels.
Ripley premieres April 4 on Netflix.
